Reduced graft survival in renal transplant patients with urinary tract infections - a meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Filtering the literature for a strict definition of UTI allowed us to establish an association between UTI and graft loss in renal transplant patients. However, further investigation and stronger studies using the Goldman criteria are needed to allow stratification for UTI severity and effect on graft loss.PMID:38314732 | DOI:10.61409/A06230424 (Source: Danish Medical Journal)

The therapeutic potential of galanin in the management of pain - a review article
Dan Med J. 2024 Jan 23;71(2):A10230653. doi: 10.61409/A10230653.ABSTRACTNeuropeptides represent the most diverse family of neurotransmitters counting numerous members and even more G protein-coupled receptors, all of which are potential targets for drug development. Here, we focus on galanin and its three receptors by describing their possible involvement in pain and regeneration. Although animal experiments indicate that galanin, together with other molecules, may act as an endogenous system protecting against pain and improving nerve growth, these results have so far not been translated into patient treatments.PMID:38314...

Adherence to guidelines prior to endoscopic sinus surgery in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and asthma
CONCLUSIONS: Asthma was lower in the study population than in the literature. Danish national guidelines on CRS management are insufficient regarding attention to asthma. Results call attention to the need for more multidisciplinary team management.FUNDING: None.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not relevant.PMID:38314735 | DOI:10.61409/A04230241 (Source: Danish Medical Journal)

Infrequent transition to direct oral anticoagulants in patients with cancer
CONCLUSIONS. In patients with cancer, the one-year cumulative incidence of switching from LMWH to DOAC was less-t 35% in patients eligible for DOAC, revealing a potential for improved anticoagulant treatment. Furthermore, contemporary data elaborated on potential DDIs between DOACs/antineoplastic agents.FUNDING: "Helsefonden" (21-B-0350) and the "Karen Elise Jensens Fonden" (29-4-2021) funded the study.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not relevant.PMID:38314737 | DOI:10.61409/A05230278 (Source: Danish Medical Journal)

Complications in hepatic vein catheterisation and transjugular liver biopsy
CONCLUSION: HVC and TJLB are safe procedures. The complication rate for HVC and TJLB was 3.3% and 6.8%, respectively. Complications were minor; only four major complications after TJLB were found - none of which were mortal.FUNDING: None.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not relevant.PMID:38235984 (Source: Danish Medical Journal)

A survey of preoperative diagnosis and management of complicated appendicitis
CONCLUSIONS: Resident surgeons in Eastern Denmark use non-specific diagnostic techniques to distinguish complicated from uncomplicated appendicitis and would change treatment if appendicitis was diagnosed preoperatively. However, despite limited interest, our results suggest a need for new diagnostic markers to differentiate between the severity of appendicitis, thus enhancing education and training in managing such cases.FUNDING: None.TRIAL REGISTRATION: None.PMID:38018705 (Source: Danish Medical Journal)

Genetics of metabolic traits in Greenlanders
Dan Med J. 2023 Nov 16;70(12):A05230332.ABSTRACTThe history of the Greenlandic population has contributed to a unique genetic composition in which high-impact and often novel genetic variants segregate at a high frequency. As a result, research in smaller populations like the Greenlandic has the potential to reveal genetic variation and associations that are not present or discoverable in other populations. In this review, we provide a summary of our research in Greenlanders and our findings of genetic variants with high impact on metabolic health, and outline the implications that this research has for the equitable distr...
