Building kidney organoids from pluripotent stem cells
Purpose of review
During embryogenesis, the kidney is mainly generated from three progenitor cells; nephron progenitors, ureteric bud progenitors and stromal progenitors. Mutual interactions of the all three progenitor populations are essential to form a functional kidney with the higher-order structure. Pluripotent stem cells have potential to differentiate into all cell types of the animal body, including the kidney. In this review, we will summarize recent advances in reconstructing kidney organoids from pluripotent stem cells.

Clinical utility of bone turnover markers in patients with chronic kidney disease
Purpose of review
The burden of fractures is very high in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is increasingly recognized that knowledge of bone turnover is of paramount importance in guiding mineral metabolism and osteoporosis therapy in CKD. Bone histomorphometry is the gold standard to assess bone turnover, but is seldomly performed in clinical practice. Bone turnover markers (BTMs) may be the long awaited noninvasive diagnostic that may help to close the therapeutic gap in patients with advanced CKD presenting with bone fragility.

Anemia and fibroblast growth factor 23 elevation in chronic kidney disease: homeostatic interactions and emerging therapeutics
Purpose of review
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive disorder that is associated with development of elevated fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) levels and anemia. Here, we review recent literature that extends our current knowledge on the interactions between FGF23 and anemia in CKD and the impact of anemia-targeting therapeutics on FGF23 elevation in CKD.

Lipocalin-2: a novel link between the injured kidney and the bone
Purpose of review
Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) excess is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and early mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and in animal models. Elevated Lipocalin-2 (LCN2), produced by the injured kidneys, contributes to CKD progression and might aggravate cardiovascular outcomes. The current review aims to highlight the role of LCN2 in CKD, particularly its interactions with FGF23.

Contribution of phosphate and FGF23 to CKD progression
Purpose of review
Progressive forms of chronic kidney disease (CKD) exhibit kidney inflammation and fibrosis that drive continued nephron loss; however, factors responsible for the development of these common pathologic features remain poorly defined. Recent investigations suggest pathways involved in maintaining urinary phosphate excretion in CKD may be contributing to kidney function decline. This review provides an update on recent evidence linking altered phosphate homeostasis to CKD progression.
