The Relation Between Children's Participation in Their Daily life and Their Subjective Well-Being
AbstractChildren ’s well-being and children’s right to participation are important concepts for those striving to improve children’s lives. Recent years have brought growing conceptual recognition that children’s rights, particularly children’s right to participation, are part of their well-being. However, these two concepts have been addressed separately, especially in research, as they are seen as two different goals of children’s lives. The current study empirically examines the connection between children’s participation in their daily lives (in their family, school and in their country) and their subject...

The Factor Structure of Different Subjective Well-Being Measures and its Correlates in the Croatian Sample of Children and Adolescents
AbstractThe transition from middle childhood to early adolescence is one of the crucial developmental periods for studying children ’s subjective well-being (SWB). For developmental trends in SWB to be accurately estimated, it is necessary to demonstrate the measurement invariance of its measures. The first goal of this study was to explore the structure and measurement invariance with respect to age and gender of several comm on measures of child and adolescent subjective well-being. A tripartite higher-order model of subjective well-being was also tested, and its measurement invariance was investigated as well. Lastly,...

The Increasing Prevalence of Children Home Alone in Ghana: The Importance of Considering Regional Inequalities
AbstractResearch from industrialized settings has linked inadequate child supervision with various negative consequences. Nevertheless, empirical research in lower- and middle-income countries about correlates of inadequate child supervision has been scarce. The few studies that exist tended to focus on individual- and household-level factors, and reported associations that are not significant or in mixed directions depending on the context. Structural factors are left underexplored, but taking a more macro-level lens in settings with high regional disparities can hold the key to explaining increases in prevalence of inade...

Differences between genders in the subjective well-being of students participating in PISA 2018
AbstractAdolescence is a critical period for the development of cognitive personality and maturation. Subjective well-being (SWB) levels decreases during this phase of life. Within this theme, the article investigates possible differences between the genders in the three dimensions established by subjective well-being. Each of its components, satisfaction with life, positive effect and negative effect are estimated through Exploratory Factorial Analysis. To do so, Pisa 2018 data is used and the differences between genders are measured by an Oaxaca-blinder decomposition. The estimation indicates that girls present a lower l...

Understanding and Measuring Child Well-being in the Region of Attica, Greece: Round Five
AbstractThis research paper aims to present the results of the implementation of the C.W.-SMILE tool that recorded child well-being in the second semester of the 2020 –2021 school year. This is the fifth round of this ongoing diachronic research. The C.W.-SMILE tool consists of six dimensions: home conditions (D.1), nutrition (D.2), unemployment of guardians (D.3), free healthcare (D.4), moral education (D.5), and leisure (D.6). The first three dimensions conce rn children’s economic well-being, while the latter three dimensions determine children’s non-economic well-being. Based on welfare economics, the combination...

Policy Recommendations from an Empirical Study of an Online Foster Care Community
This study is a descriptive, quantitative analysis of qualitatively-coded posts from an online community for people with lived experience in the foster care system. The study provides empirical evidence and insights into some of the benefits and risks of membership in one such community. The results indicate that people with lived experience discussed topics of importance to the transition to adulthood in ways that are distinct from people who have not spent time in the foster care system. Within the discussion by people with lived experience, topics related to risks and protective factors tended to be discussed more negat...

Latent Profile Analysis of the Positive Development of Migrant Adolescents: the Roles of Family Capital and Resilience
This study included 1279 migrant adolescents in junior high schools who were instructed to complete a series of questionnaires. The results revealed three positive development profiles, namely low, moderate, and high positive development. A multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that female migrant adolescents were more likely than their male counterparts to be assigned to the high positive development profile than to the low positive development profile. Moreover, migrant adolescents with higher resilience and family economic capital were more likely to be assigned to the high positive development profile than ...

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Substance Use Among Korean College Students: Different by Gender?
This study used data collected in 2019 from a national sample of Korean college students (N  = 1,037). This study conducted a Latent Class Analysis (LCA) with distal outcomes, using the Bolck, Croons, and Hagenaars method. The independent variable was the patterns of ACEs identified using 14 indicators of childhood adversity. Two dependent variables measured self-reported substance use in smoking and alcohol use. The LCA identified four heterogeneous ACEs classes:High Adversity,Family Violence,Economic Hardship, andLow Adversity. The analysis showed different associations between the ACE patterns and substance use by g...

A Systematic Review of Instruments Measuring Social and Emotional Skills in School-Aged Children and Adolescents
AbstractStrengthening social and emotional skills can be particularly relevant concerning the emerging skills need as it yields benefits for individuals ’ successful development. A growing body of research suggests that social and emotional competences are associated with well-being and positive life and academic outcomes. Despite the notable benefits of social and emotional skills, assessment tools are still scarce or target specific risk and pro blematic behaviours. This systematic review seeks to address this gap and identify instruments measuring social and emotional skills for students in elementary through secondar...

The Effect of Body Image Perceptions on Life Satisfaction and Emotional Wellbeing of Adolescent Students:
Abstract Studies investigating specific determinants of subjective wellbeing (such as body image perceptions) using experimental/quasi-experimental methods are lacking. Furthermore, few studies considered more than one dimension of wellbeing, used multi-country samples, or considered a variety of determinants/correlates of wellbeing. Only a small minority of studies are on adolescents. I used a large multi-country sample of 15-year-old students, to implement an innovative methodological approach which accounts for potential endogeneity of body image perceptions and derive estimates of the effect of body image on the cogn...

Psychometric Properties of the Chinese Version of the Highly Sensitive Child Scale Across Age Groups, Gender, and Informants
AbstractSensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS) is theorized to be a fundamental trait capturing children ’s general sensitivity to the environment. Yet, scientific knowledge of SPS is mostly based on findings from Western cultures and few translated measures exist to assess children’s SPS outside of Western countries. Therefore, we developed the Chinese Highly Sensitive Child (HSC) scale. In Study 1, we investigated the scale’s psychometric properties for both self-reports (N = 2925,Mage = 11.74 years, 43.3% girls) and caregiver reports (n = 460,Mchild age = 9.02 years, 44.0% girls). Findings replicated most ps...
