Nonclinical factors affecting intraoperative red blood cell transfusion: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: Our systematic review has synthesized the literature on nonclinical and behavioural factors impacting intraoperative transfusion decision-making, categorized using the TDF. These findings can inform evidence-based interventions to reduce intraoperative RBC transfusion variability.STUDY REGISTRATION: Open Science Framework ( https://osf.io/pm8zs/?view_only=166299ed28964804b9360c429b1218c1 ; first posted, 3 August 2022).PMID:38509437 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-024-02739-9 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

Measurements of pupillary unrest using infrared pupillometry fail to detect changes in pain intensity in patients after surgery: a prospective observational study
CONCLUSION: In this prospective observational study, pupillometric measurements of pupillary unrest did not identify changes in pain intensity in a postoperative, predominantly opioid-exposed patient population. While the sample size was small, the use of measurements of pupillary unrest to detect and quantify pain has to be questioned.PMID:38504035 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-024-02716-2 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

Validation of the postoperative Quality of Recovery-15 questionnaire after emergency surgery and association with quality of life at three months
CONCLUSION: The QoR-15 score is valid for measuring early postoperative recovery after emergency surgery. The H24 score significantly correlated with both the three-month quality of life and the number of days at home.STUDY REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04845763); first submitted 11 April 2021.PMID:38504036 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-024-02722-4 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

Ambulatory total hip and knee arthroplasty: a literature review and perioperative considerations
CONCLUSION: Anesthesia for TJA has evolved as such that same-day discharge will become the norm for selected patients. It is essential to establish pathways for early discharge to prevent adverse effects and readmission in this population. As more data are generated from an increased volume of ambulatory TJA, more robust evidence will emerge for the ideal anesthetic components to optimize outcomes.PMID:38504037 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-024-02699-0 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

A Canadian survey of perceptions and practices related to ordering of blood tests in the intensive care unit
CONCLUSION: Most respondents to this survey perceived that unnecessary blood testing occurs in the ICU. The survey identified possible strategies to decrease the number of blood tests.PMID:38504038 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-024-02745-x (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

Impact of COVID-19-related restricted family presence policies on Canadian pediatric intensive care unit clinicians: a qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Pediatric intensive care unit clinicians were impacted by restricted family presence policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. These policies contributed to feelings of disempowerment and challenged clinicians' perceived ability to provide the best family-centred care possible. Frontline expertise should be incorporated into the design and implementation of policies to best support family-centred care in any context and minimize risks of moral distress for PICU clinicians.PMID:38507024 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-024-02742-0 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

CONCLUSIONS: Insertion of the i-gel supraglottic airway was significantly more successful, easier, and faster while applying paratracheal pressure than cricoid pressure.STUDY REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05377346); first submitted 11 May 2022.PMID:38507025 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-024-02741-1 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)
