Transesophageal echocardiographic acquisition of the venous excess ultrasound exam-a case series and technical description
CONCLUSION: Given the risks of fluid overload in critically ill cardiac surgery patients, TEE-supported VExUS examination may be a way to reduce morbidity in this population.PMID:38286981 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02688-9 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

Perioperative copeptin: predictive value and risk stratification in patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery-a prospective observational cohort study
CONCLUSION: The results of the present prospective observational cohort study suggest that perioperative copeptin concentrations can help identify patients at risk for all-cause mortality and/or MACCE. Other identified risk factors were revised cardiac risk index, body mass index, surgical risk, and preoperative hemoglobin.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02687776); first submitted 9 February 2016.PMID:38243094 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02677-y (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

A comparative evaluation of fibreoptic bronchoscopy versus C-MAC < sup > ® < /sup > D-BLADE-guided videolaryngoscopy for nasotracheal intubation under general anesthesia in oropharyngeal carcinoma surgery patients
CONCLUSION: Compared to FB, C-MAC D-BLADE-based VL reduced the total time for nasal intubation oropharyngeal carcinoma patients, potentially representing an acceptable alternative in selected cases.TRIAL REGISTRATION: CTRI.nic.in (2018/11/0162830); first submitted 8 November 2018.PMID:38243098 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02687-w (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

Exposure levels and target attainment of piperacillin/tazobactam in adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit: a prospective observational study
CONCLUSION: In this prospective observational study of adult ICU patients receiving intravenous PTZ, a large proportion had subtherapeutic concentrations of piperacillin. This was most notable in patients with normal to augmented renal clearance. More aggressive dosage regimens may be required for this subpopulation to ensure attainment of efficacy targets.PMID:38243099 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02689-8 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

Effect of using smaller blood volume tubes and closed blood collection devices on total blood loss in patients undergoing major cardiac and vascular surgery
CONCLUSION: Diagnostic laboratory tests are associated with significant patient blood loss, but are a modifiable risk factor. The use of small-volume tubes and closed blood collection devices decreases the volume of patient blood drawn for analysis and prevents blood waste.PMID:38191843 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02643-8 (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)

Perioperative clinical practice recommendations for pediatric tonsillectomy: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and steroids are recommended in the perioperative management of pediatric tonsillectomy. Future CPG should further clarify the safe use of opioids based on severity of obstructive sleep apnea and in the context of opioid-sparing techniques, such as dexmedetomidine, high-dose dexamethasone, and gabapentinoids.STUDY REGISTRATION: PROSPERO (CRD42021253374); first submitted 18 June 2021.PMID:38182827 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02668-z (Source: Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia)
