Comparative assessment of metabolic, ionic and molecular responsiveness of four facultative halophytes to habitat salinization in the southwest of Jeddah Governorate, Saudi Arabia
This study explores the influence of salinity on some physiological and biochemical pathways of four facultative halophytes (Abutilon pannosum, Indigofera oblongifolia, Senna italica, and Tetraena coccinea) along the southwest coast of Jeddah Governorate. Through a comparative analysis of these plants in both saline and non-saline environments, the study investigates chlorophyll levels, ion concentrations within the plants, the correlation with the SOS1 gene, and the impact of salinity on metabolic compounds. The overarching goal is to gain insights into the adaptive mechanisms of these specific plants to salt stress, prov...

The effect of climate change on agricultural production in Iran
This study investigates the effects of climatic variables temperature, such as precipitation, carbon and dioxide emission on total crop production in Iran from 1971 to 2020 using a fully modified conventional least squares econometric model (FMOLS). Chemical fertilizer and crop area variables, as well as fixed capital in agricultural have machinery, also been used as indicators of technology. The results showed that all variables had a significant effect on production. The average annual temperature and total annual rainfall its had an inverse U-shaped relationship with production, and were significant. Fertilizer and crop...

Braz J Biol. 2024 Feb 26;83:e278315. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.278315. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTUnderstanding the distribution and demographic structure of populations is essential for species conservation. In Brazil, the rheophyte group has been greatly affected by the construction of hydroelectric dams. All know populations of Dyckia brevifolia Baker along Itajaí-Açu River were studied. The plants were classified as seedlings, immature or reproductive rosettes. In addition, the number of dead rosettes, except for seedlings, was determined in five populations of D. brevifolia. The total number of rosettes per population ra...

Increasing the meat productivity of young sheep based on the use of the gene pool of the Dorper and Hissar breeds
This study aims to assess the efficacy of integrating Dorper and Hissar rams into the breeding program of Kazakh fat-tailed coarse-haired ewes for generating young mutton. The research involved forming three groups, each comprising 40 ewes of the Kazakh fat-tailed coarse-haired breed, based on analog pairs. Ewes in Group I were inseminated with Dorper ram semen, those in Group II were inseminated with Hissar ram semen, and Group III served as a control with purebred Kazakh fat-tailed coarse-haired sheep breeding. Results revealed that crossbred rams in Group II achieved a significantly higher live weight of 45.2 kg at 120 ...

Micromorphological characterization and electron microscopic study of parasitic species of the family Loranthaceae Juss
In this study, cluster dendrogram (CD), principal component analysis (PCA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to evaluate the ability to discriminate Loranthaceae species using micromorphological characteristics. Most of the micromorphological characteristics of the leaf and fruit surfaces used reflected significant variation between the species of Loranthaceae. The type of stomata, trichome, lenticels, fine relief of the cell wall and wax form were the most taxonomically important characteristics. In addition, the cluster dendrogram of morphological characteristics showed species distribution within branches based...

Braz J Biol. 2024 Feb 26;83:e279308. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.279308. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this research was to investigate the measures, topography, and vascularization of the thyroid gland in Macaca mulatta, a non-human primate. The study involved the dissection of ten male adult cadavers of Macaca mulatta. The length, width, and thickness of the right lobe of the thyroid were 2.552 ± 0.341, 1.019 ± 0.137, and 0.729 ± 0.137 cm. These measures in the left thyroid lobe were 2.406 ± 0.299, 1.013. ± 0.087, and 0.769 ± 0.083 cm. The study found no significant differences in the measures of the left and ...

Heritability and amylose content in hybrid lines of late-generation rice with colored pericarp
Braz J Biol. 2024 Feb 26;83:e280919. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.280919. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTImproving grain quality in rice breeding is one of the main tasks. This concerns the creation of rice varieties with colored pericarp uncommon in the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the assessment of its quality is an important stage of breeding. Rice with colored pericarp is an important dietary crop, more useful for the human body than white rice. Regardless of the type of rice, the amount of amylose in rice grain is a crucial indicator that determines the quality of rice. The paper presents the results of electrophoretic separation ...

Evaluation of clinical efficacy of streptokinase by comparison with the thrombolytic agent on animal model
This study aimed to produce streptokinase from Streptococcus pyogenes EBL-48 and compare its efficacy with heparin in an animal model. We evaluated the clot-lysing effectiveness of streptokinase produced from Streptococcus pyogenes EBL-48, emphasizing its low cost and ease of production. Streptokinase was produced using pre-optimized fermentation media and purified through ion exchange and gel-filtration chromatography. In vivo analysis involved inducing clots in a trial animal model using ferric chloride, comparing streptokinase with heparin. Ultrasonography assessed the clot-lysing activity of streptokinase. Streptokinas...

The objective of this work was characterizing persimmons of the 'Giombo' and 'Rama Forte' cultivars harvested at different ripening stages in the Brazilian semiarid. Fruits were harvested at three ripening stages - green, semi-ripe and ripe - then evaluated for the following characteristics: fruit weight and diameter, skin and pulp color, fruit firmness, pulp pH, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, SSC/TA ratio, total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, astringency index, and the contents of tannin, vitamin C, carotenoid, β-carotene, and total extractable polyphenols. Also, total antioxidant activity by the DPPH and ...

Altitudinal distribution and body condition of migratory fish juveniles Megaleporinus obtusidens (Valenciennes) and Salminus brasiliensis (Cuvier) in the main channel of the Uruguay River, Southern Brazil
In this study, we analyzed the altitudinal distribution and body condition of the juvenile migratory fish Megaleporinus obtusidens and Salminus brasiliensis in the Uruguay River, a South American subtropical river. We used the presence/absence data and condition factor (K) of juveniles as indicators to try to characterize some recruitment patterns of migratory fish in the main channel of the Uruguay River. Gillnet sampling was conducted during two reproductive years, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 (November and March of each reproductive year), in three Uruguay River stretches at different levels of altitude. The nets remained in...
