Safety evaluation of a proprietary ayruveda-based polyherbal preparation (arthralgex) used for arthritis
Braz J Biol. 2024 Mar 4;84:e275707. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.275707. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTArthralgex is a proprietary polyherbal preparation used in clinics to treat rheumatoid arthritis for decades. Its safety evaluation has not been reported. The study is aimed at evaluating the safety of arthralgex using Wistar rats, as per OECD guidelines. According to OECD 407, rats of either gender were separated into six groups (n= 6 each). The dose of arthralgex was decided based on an acute toxicity study. Under the treatment group, separate set of rats received arthralgex in three dose levels like - low, medium, and high (200, ...

Investigation of phytochemical composition and bioactivity evaluation of extracts from Myrsine umbellata Mart
The objective of the study was to carry out phytochemical prospection through colorimetric tests to determine the groups of secondary metabolites and also to determine the total content of phenolic compounds (TPC) present in plant extracts methanol (ME), ethyl acetate (EAE), hexane (HE) and dichloromethane (DE) from the leaves of Myrsine umbellata, as well as to investigate the antimicrobial activity against twelve standard ATCC strains by the broth microdilution technique; the antioxidant potential by the DPPH method and the ABTS method and the antibiofilm potential on the biofilm biomass of standard bacteria by the cryst...

Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of Eucalyptus radiata essential oil against Escherichia coli strains isolated from meat products
Braz J Biol. 2024 Mar 4;84:e281361. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.281361. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe present study sought to evaluate the antimicrobial and anti-adherent potential of Eucalyptus radiata essential oil against food-borne strains of Escherichia coli. The study was performed using the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). In addition, the disk diffusion technique was used to evaluate the association of Eucalyptus radiata essential oil with synthetic antimicrobials. The Minimum Inhibitory Adherence Concentration (MIC) was also performed. The results revealed that E. radi...

Evaluation and estimation of diuretic activity of the linalyl acetate in the rats
This study aimed to explore the diuretic activity of linalyl acetate (LA). LA is an essential oil, it is an integral phyto-constituent of various plants. In this study, acute and chronic diuretic activities were explored by measuring the levels of different electrolytes and pH in the urine of experimental rats. Rats were divided into five groups. The control group was given 10 mg/kg normal saline, the treated group was given 10 mg/kg furosemide, and the remaining 3 groups received different doses of LA including 25, 50, and 75 mg/kg through intraperitoneal route, to determine its diuretic potential. Urine volume for acute ...

Analytical assessment of clinical sensitivity and specificities of pharmaceutical rapid SARS-CoV-2 detection nasopharyngeal swab testing kits in Pakistan
Braz J Biol. 2024 Mar 4;84:e265550. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.265550. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTDespite of the global unity against COVID-19 pandemic, the threat of SARS-CoV-2 variants on the lives of human being is still not over. SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has urged the need of rapid viral detection at earliest. To cope with gradually expanding scenario of SARS-CoV-2, accurate diagnosis is extremely crucial factor which should be noticed by international health organizations. Limited research followed by sporadic marketing of SARS-CoV-2 rapid pharmaceutical detection kits raises critical questions against quality assurance and qual...

Plant growth regulators and mobilization of reserves in imbibition phases of yellow passion fruit
Braz J Biol. 2024 Mar 4;84:e273999. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.273999. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe production of seedlings of the passion fruit tree, usually, is sexual, and the seeds are not uniform in the seedling emergence, and soaking treatments of seeds can provide faster and more uniform germination. It was aimed to study the action of plant growth regulators and the mobilization of reserves in the stages of soaking of yellow passion fruit seeds. The seeds were soaked for five hours in solutions containing plant growth regulators, in a completely randomized design, in a factorial 8 x 4, with four replications. The first...
