The restraint chair: A qualitative study of the patient experience
Despite initiatives to eliminate restraint from acute psychiatric care, there remain times when violent episodes threaten the safety of patients and/or staff. The restraint chair may be used in these moments and provide an alternative to four-point restraint. The purpose of this study was to examine the patient experience of the restraint chair. Patients who had an episode of restraint in the restraint chair during their hospital stay were interviewed about the experience. Participants described the experience as “unpleasant,” with the majority preferring the restraint chair to other methods of restraint they had exper...

Prioritizing high quality care for women veterans: The time is now
Women military Veterans represent a growing population with unique healthcare needs. Women are the fastest-growing demographic of Veterans, with projections that women will comprise 18  % of all Veterans by the year 2040, as compared to 4 % in 2004 (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2020). In response to the projected increases in women Veterans, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) began developing targeted healthcare services for women Veterans over forty years ago. I n 1982, the U.S. General Accounting Office published a report entitled “Actions needed to insure that female Veterans have equal access to Vet...

Interview with Rev. Deanna Hollas, Gun Violence Prevention Coordinator Presbyterian Peace Fellowship
I am a native Texan from a family of hunters. Guns were normalized in my childhood home and the rural agricultural community where I was raised. I then went to Texas A&M for college where many of my classmates served in the military after graduation. Because guns were normalized for me, I didn't think much about guns or gun laws until 2016 when Texas passed a law allowing guns on college campuses. Our oldest daughter was a student at Texas Tech at the time and I saw how her friends and roommates reacted to the law — which I now know is exactly how the law intended. The lifeline and advanced practice nursing/intervention prevention perspective
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (hereinafter referred to as The Lifeline) is a national effort to provide mental health crisis support for individuals or 3rd parties (requesting help for others) via a three-digit phone number. Since July 2022, the Lifeline is part of a national effort to assist individuals who are suicidal, homicidal, or distressed. Over half of suicides in the United States are completed with a gun, hence the need for an effort to focus on prevention related to a growing tragic loss of life. This is America
As the parent of a 3  year old who will soon be going out into the war zone, or rather, school - I wanted to create something that showed how dispensable we've let our children and young adults become. The gun lobby equates them to the cost for a bullet, meanwhile we send our children off to fight for their lives and their education, all in the name of profit. It's disgusting, but unfortunately - this is America. (Source: Archives of Psychiatric Nursing)

Mass shootings, firearm injuries, and mental health
The correlation between mass shootings, firearm injuries, and mental health is an ongoing polarized debate within the U.S., making it essential to develop public policy on mental illness and firearm injuries exacerbated by a significant increase in firearm sales in March 2020. Although many mass shooters are labeled “mentally ill,” mental illness is only present in a small minority of cases. Most mentally ill people are never violent but are more likely to be the victims of violence.Easy access to firearms and a triggering event deriving from social and economic inequalities are primary causes of mass shoot ings and gr...
