The price of conference attendance: Opportunities to improve access for medical students
Medical conferences are valuable forums for medical students to explore specialties of interest and form professional connections. More than 120 medical specialty societies comprise the American Medical Association (AMA) Federation of Medicine and host annual meetings, providing a venue for discourse, networking, and the exchange of knowledge. For medical students without a home residency program in their specialty of interest, annual meetings provide one avenue for establishing mentorship relationships ahead of residency applications. Disparities in Indigenous Health: What can we do?
How did I interpret the invitation to speak at Dr. Janice Pasieka's Festschrift, a celebration of the surgeon who first exposed me to the clinical career path I ultimately chose? This was an opportunity to reflect on the impact she had and to say thank you. In medical school I did not know that endocrine surgery was an area one could sub-specialize in, but ‘JP’ opened that door and gave me a glimpse at my future. I read her papers, heard her speak at conferences and saw her as a role model for what was possible. (Source: American Journal of Surgery)

Pancreaticoduodenectomy following liver transplantation: Operative technique and outcomes
Orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) remains the only viable treatment strategy for patients with end stage liver disease. Since the first successful OLT in 1963, survival has significantly improved, reaching approximately 80  % at 3 years, which leaves patients at risk of developing secondary malignancies or age-related diagnoses requiring surgical intervention.1 Abdominal operations, particularly those involving the pancreatic head and biliary tree such as pancreaticoduodenectomy, following OLT present significant te chnical challenges given the anatomic changes and profound adhesive disease following the thorough dissect...

Navigating post- hepatectomy care: Risk-stratified pathways and patient-centric medicine
In the study “Utilizing Risk-Stratified Pathways to Personalize Post-Hepatectomy Discharge Planning: A Contemporary Analysis of 1354 Patients” Martin et al. utilized a prospective quality improvement institutional database at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to stratify patients who underwen t hepatectomy by risk of early postoperative events.1 The authors have previously described the creation of preoperatively assigned risk-stratified post-hepatectomy pathways designed with the goal of reducing hospital length of stay.
