The efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy is different for type 4 and large type 3 gastric cancer
In the JCOG0501 study, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) failed to demonstrate survival benefits for type 4 and large type 3 gastric cancer (GC). The prognosis of these patients is still poor. We conducted this study to explore the value of NAC with non-SP regimens for type 4 and large type 3  GC in the Chinese population. (Source: American Journal of Surgery)

Few top-ranked hospitals in impoverished communities reflected in worse surgical outcomes
Shaikh et al. submit an analysis of outcomes of major surgical procedures among medicare beneficiaries at top-ranked 50 hospitals comparing patients based on county poverty level over three decades. The authors should be commended for this innovative approach to assessing disparities in surgical care. The authors found that important surgical outcome measures were better for patients undergoing four major surgical procedures - specifically, 30-day mortality, complications, and failure to rescue were lower for patients treated at top-ranked hospitals. Single-use negative pressure wound therapy versus conventional dressings for the reduction of surgical site infections in closed surgical incisions: Systematic literature review and meta-analysis
To evaluate whether a single-use negative pressure wound therapy (sNPWT) device can reduce the incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) in at-risk patients with closed surgical incisions across a range of surgical specialties, compared with standard care. (Source: American Journal of Surgery)

Breast infections: A review of current literature
This article provides a summary of the current trends in management of breast infections. The etiology, epidemiology, risk factors, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of mastitis and breast abscesses (and their relative subdivisions) are explored based on the current literature. Graves ’ disease: Unveiling a novel etiology of secondary hyperparathyroidism
Patients with Graves' disease (GD) can display hyperparathyroidism (HPT). Despite the growing awareness of HPT occurring alongside GD, no studies have investigated the relationship between GD secondary to HPT.1,2 Its clinical significance and optimal management remain poorly defined. There remains a gap in the literature regarding a comprehensive evaluation of this association, and the outcomes of thyroidectomy in such cases. Herein, we present four cases of secondary HPT caused by GD who were successfully treated through thyroidectomy alone. (Source: American Journal of Surgery)

Rectus to defect ratio for estimating the complexity of ventral hernia repair: Is it reliable for robotic surgery?
The rectus to defect ratio (RDR) has been previously described as a metric which enables surgeons to estimate the need to perform additional myofascial release (AMR), in addition to open Rives-Stoppa retro-muscular hernia repair. We sought to validate this measurement specifically for patients undergoing robotic totally extraperitoneal (eTEP) hernia repair. (Source: American Journal of Surgery)

Analysis of survival outcomes following robotic hepatectomy for malignant liver diseases
Despite increased adoption of the robotic platform for complex hepatobiliary resections for malignant disease, little is known about long-term survival outcomes. This is the first study to evaluate the postoperative outcomes, and short- and long-term survival rates after a robotic hepatectomy for five major malignant disease processes. Is therapeutic lymph node dissection of value for lymph node recurrence in melanoma?
Therapeutic lymphadenectomy (TLND) is still performed in most melanoma patients to treat nodal recurrences after initial negative lymph node biopsy (-SLNB), despite the lack of evidence for survival benefit. We sought to compare melanoma-specific survival (MSS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) of patients who underwent TLND versus no TLND using our institutional and MSTL-1 databases. Post-discharge venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in hospitalized trauma patients: A retrospective comparison of patients receiving versus not receiving post-discharge prophylaxis
Risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in many trauma patients extends beyond hospitalization, but there is a paucity of evidence to guide the use of post-discharge prophylaxis (PDP). (Source: American Journal of Surgery)
