Deconstructing the professional identity formation of basic science teachers in medical education
ConclusionIt is important to address the PIF of BSTs given their dynamic roles. Looking through the lens of the 4S framework, PIF is indeed a transition process. A structured, stepwise faculty development program, including mentorship, reflective practice, and a community of practice designed to foster BSTs ’ identities, should be created, taking into consideration the diverse factors influencing the PIF of BSTs. Professional identity formation: linking meaning to well-being
AbstractTrainee distress and burnout continue to be serious concerns for educational programs in medicine, prompting the implementation of numerous interventions. Although an expansive body of literature suggests that the experience of meaning at work is critical to professional wellbeing, relatively little attention has been paid to how this might be leveraged in the educational milieu. We propose that professional identity formation (PIF), the process by which trainees come to not only attain competence, but additionally to “think, act and feel” like physicians, affords us a unique opportunity to ground trainees in t...

Comparing the effectiveness of two diagnostic approaches for the interpretation of oral radiographic lesions by dental students
This study introduced dental students to two diagnostic aids with contrasting reasoning approaches —ORAD DDx, which uses an analytic, forward reasoning approach, and a Radiographic Atlas, which emphasizes a non-analytic, backward reasoning approach. We compared the effectiveness of ORAD DDx and the Atlas in improving students’ diagnostic accuracy and their ability to recall features of radiog raphic lesions. Participants (99 third-year dental students) were assigned to ORAD DDx, Atlas and Control groups. In the pre-test and post-test, participants provided their diagnosis for eight types of radiographic lesions. All gr...

‘Making room for student autonomy’ – an ethnographic study of student participation in clinical work
AbstractParticipation in clinical work is important for medical students ’ professional development. However, students often report that they experience a passive observer role, and further research on contextual factors that influence student participation is needed. The theory of practice architectures contributes a new perspective to this challenge by elucidating ho w cultural-discursive, material-economic, and social-political arrangements enable and constrain student participation in clinical work. The aim of this study was to explore how practice architectures in clinical learning environments enable and constra...

Peer overmarking and insufficient diagnosticity: the impact of the rating method for peer assessment
AbstractThe present study explores two rating methods for peer assessment (analytical rating using criteria and comparative judgement) in light of concurrent validity, reliability and insufficient diagnosticity (i.e. the degree to which substandard work is recognised by the peer raters). During a second-year undergraduate course, students wrote a one-page essay on an air pollutant. A first cohort (N  = 260) relied on analytical rating using criteria to assess their peers’ essays. A total of 1297 evaluations were made, and each essay received at least four peer ratings. Results indicate a small correlation between pee...

Problem representation and diagnostic accuracy during an OSCE
Conclusions: Prompting students to form a summary statement did not improve diagnostic accuracy. Better summary statements were not correlated with diagnostic accuracy. (Source: Advances in Health Sciences Education)

Undergraduate paramedic students and interpersonal communication development: a scoping review
The objective of this review is to examine the current literature related to interpersonal communication skill development within undergraduate paramedicine. Interpersonal communication is a vital paramedic skill, with evidence demonstrating it leads to improved patient outcomes and satisfaction and reduces medical errors. Interpersonal communication is a core capability set by paramedicine regulatory bodies, and it is the responsibility of accredited universities to ensure graduates are ready for industry and possess all required skills and attributes. In order to be included in this scoping review, all articles were requ...

A theoretical systematic review of patient involvement in health and social care education
AbstractPatient involvement in health and social care education lacks theoretical underpinning, despite increasing calls for rigour. Theories help explain how learning is advanced and offer guidance for how faculty work with patients who become involved in curriculum delivery. We conducted a systematic review to synthesise how theory shapes our understanding of patient involvement in health and social care education. Three databases were systematically searched. Studies demonstrating explicit and high-quality application of theory to patient involvement in teaching and learning or involvement within a community of health a...

Expectations for PhDs in health professions education: an international EPA-framed, modified Delphi study
AbstractHealth professions education (HPE) has matured into field of study that employs and produces specialized educational scholars. Many academic institutions employ such scholars to support development and innovation in education. Simultaneously, the possibilities to obtain a PhD degree in HPE are expanding. Clarity in the expectations that such a degree brings along can be useful for scholars, employers and institutions. Anticipating that the views of what a PhD in HPE is or should be can vary between institutions, cultures and countries, we conducted an international Delphi study to identify EPAs for HPE PhDs. We use...

Learning in and across communities of practice: health professions education students ’ learning from boundary crossing
This study adds to the HPE literature by demonstrating the learning potential of boundaries and to the broader literature by showing how responses to boundary experiences are intertwined with the p rocess of growing into a CoP. The findings can be used to design future boundary objects. (Source: Advances in Health Sciences Education)

Exploring cognitive apprenticeship and teaching practices in pharmacy education
This study used qualitative methods to explore the Cognitive Apprenticeship framework in the didactic learning environment and the teaching practices that pharmacy faculty used to explicate their expert thinking to students. Faculty were observed using all four Cognitive Apprenticeship dimensions (ie, Content, Sequencing, Methods, Sociology) in their teaching practice. Patterns were observed in the data revealing complex, short and sometimes spontaneous teaching practices that faculty used to promote learning. (Source: Advances in Health Sciences Education)

Considering vocational training as selection criterion for medical students: evidence for predictive validity
AbstractPrior work experience in a relevant medical profession is an important admission criterion currently used at many German medical schools in addition to cognitive criteria. In other countries, work experience is often considered in later admission stages (e.g., interviews with pre-selected subgroups of applicants). However, evidence for its predictive validity for study success in addition to cognitive admission criteria is currently lacking. We therefore assessed whether completed vocational training in a relevant medical profession can predict study performance in the first two years of study in addition to cognit...

More than surgical tools: a systematic review of robots as didactic tools for the education of professionals in health sciences
AbstractWithin the field of robots in medical education, most of the work done during the last years has focused on surgeon training in robotic surgery, practicing surgery procedures through simulators. Apart from surgical education, robots have also been widely employed in assistive and rehabilitation procedures, where education has traditionally focused in the patient. Therefore, there has been extensive review bibliography in the field of medical robotics focused on surgical and rehabilitation and assistive robots, but there is a lack of survey papers that explore the potential of robotics in the education of healthcare...

Relationships between preadmission variables and academic outcomes for postbaccalaureate students in medical school
This study was designed to address this issue. Admissions data, preclerkship course performance and United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 results were analyzed over three years for University of California, San Diego (UCSD) postbaccalaureate premedical (PBPM) students (n  = 25), students who participated in other postbaccalaureate programs (n = 34), and for the remainder of the medical students who did not participate in any postbaccalaureate programs (n = 329). UCSD PBPM program alumni did not significantly differ in their cumulative academic performanc e on exams in preclerkship courses and USML...
