Three Ways AI-Powered Automation is Assisting Healthcare Workers
The following is a guest article by Jason Warrelmann, Vice President, Global Services & Process Industries at UiPath From battling COVID-19 surges to an increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and this year’s cold and flu season, physicians and their staffs continue to navigate one of the busiest times of the year. This, coupled with national healthcare worker shortages, means that healthcare workers are feeling heightened patient volumes and stress levels.  According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Vital Signs, nearly half (45.6%) of all healthcare workers sur...

Regarding the previous post on oligarchy . . .
I published a comment on it but I want to address it here. Obviously manufacturers moved their operations overseas in search of cheap labor and lax or non-existent environmental and safety regulations so they could make their products more cheaply, and yes, that made many products cheaper for consumers. WalMart is particularly known for squeezing manufacturers to lower prices and hence encouraging this dynamic. Americans as consumers benefited, Americans as workers lost out. As it turns out, the net result was losses for people with less education, as those manufacturing jobs -- often unionized -- that enabled blue collar ...

Digression -- an important economic fact
I commend to your attentionJeffrey A. Winters in The American Interest, with the essential truth about our present historical moment, that gets obscured in the deliberate distractions thrown up by politicians and journalists who would rather make us think and talk about something else. Pull quote:Despite polls consistently showing that large majorities favor increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans, policy has been moving for decades in the opposite direction. Reduced taxes on the ultra-rich and the corporations and banks they dominate have shifted fiscal burdens downward even as they have strained the government â...

Self monitoring – focusing on pain too much? or an essential part of living with pain?
I was just a tiny bit surprised when I looked at the results of my self-management strategy survey: self monitoring was smack bang in the middle of the list! Take a look yourself – Self monitoring is not something we discuss much in pain management circles. It’s like ‘Oooh if you keep noticing your pain you’re fixating on it and that’s bad!’ and yet I suspect it forms part of the background interoceptive awareness that most of us do whether we live with pain or not. Let’s take a deeper look at it. The ‘definition’ I used was ‘noticing your pain i...

What Is the Immune System?
A computer-generated image of the rotavirus, a virus that commonly causes illness in children through inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Credit: Bridget Carragher, The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California. What do antibodies, mucus, and stomach acid have in common? They’re all parts of the immune system! The immune system is a trained army of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to block, detect, and eliminate harmful insults to your body. It can protect you from invaders like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Innate and Adaptive The immune system is often thought of as two...

How Digital Health Companies Attract Software Engineers: Human Resource Management
The previous articles in this series discussed what kinds of programmers do well and enjoy working in a digital health company. This final article looks at some important aspects of culture and how to cultivate the developers you have. Allow Programmer Creativity, With Sensitivity Several of my respondents talked about giving professionals flexibility and autonomy. But programmers need to be sensitive to the unique needs of patients and clinicians. Health care is far different from most of the other industries they’re used to working in. As Anmol Madan, co-founder and CEO of RadiantGraph, puts it, software engineer...

How Digital Health Companies Attract Software Engineers: Strategies
The first article in this series laid out the challenges in recruiting programmers to digital health firms and who tends to make a strong contributor in those firms. Now we can cover the strategies companies use and the arguments they make. Make an Important Difference in Society Dean says that many programmers choose health IT over other industries because they want to do something positive for humanity. The programmer may have suffered a health crisis, or seen family members go through one. In any case, they find more meaning in health IT than retail, finance, or social media. Dean’s observation matches what I...

How Digital Health Companies Attract Software Engineers: Goals
Companies creating health care applications, digital fitness solutions, and other health-related software compete fiercely for technical staff. An article by Developers.Net cites various statistics suggesting that demand outstrips the supply of programmers by hundreds of thousands of people. Other disciplines (such as needed for data science and machine learning) are also hotly contested. Anmol Madan, co-founder and CEO of RadiantGraph, says that tech experts might need to accept a pay cut to work for a small digital health company. Startups just can’t compete with major employers such as Google on salary and benefit...

The Most Overhyped Technologies in Healthcare
The hype about technological development in healthcare should not blind us in terms of the probabilities and possibilities of today’s healthcare and the future of medicine. To remain objective and conscious but still optimistic, let’s look at the most overhyped technologies and keep in mind the realistic development opportunities in healing. You know the saying: the pessimist says the glass is half empty, the optimist says it is half full, and, well, the cynic asks who drank the other half? I’m truly an optimist – especially when it comes to the future of medicine and healthcare, but we need to ask the uncom...
