The Ever Evolving World of Cybersecurity Threats
Technology and the way people are using it are evolving in an increasingly steady pace. Just 20 years ago cellphones were getting photo display functions for the first time and were primarily being used to talk to people. Now our phones have facial recognition software and people are using them to shoot and edit films for fun. And the world of healthcare is no different. The amount of technology used and how it is being used has skyrocketed and unfortunately, alongside it so has the amount and sophistication of cybersecurity threats.
To hear more about the current healthcare cyberattacks, we reached out to our lovely Healt...

Throw Away That Phone
By KIM BELLARD
If I were a smarter person, I’d write something insightful about the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. If I were a better person, I’d write about the dire new UN report on climate change. But, nope, I’m too intrigued about Google announcing it was (again) killing off Glass.
It’s not that I’ve ever used them, or any AR (augmented reality) device for that matter. It’s just that I’m really interested in what comes after smartphones, and these seemed like a potential path. We all love our smartphones, but 16 years after Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone we should realize th...

Multitasking
This is something I don’t do especially well, especially lately for some reason. Part of the reason has to do with the workload; there is a lot happening with my full-time employer, in terms of events and operational stuff. In addition, I have a couple of side gigs that I am pretty busy with also.
The other reason is that I deal Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, better known as ADHD. That affects how I function. Medication helps, but not always.
I shouldn’t be this busy; I’m an old guy. But it’s keeping my reasonably young, so I shouldn’t complain.
Yesterday I sat in remotely on a meeting of th...

The New Deal and Recovery, Part 25: The RFC, Continued
George Selgin(This is the second installment of a three-part essay. The first part ishere.)Big Engines that Couldn ' tAlthough Hoover ' s Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) was " more largely a banker ' s loan bank than anything else " (Ebersole 1933, 477), financial institutions were never the only firms eligible for its support. Railroads were an important exception from the start, though they were so mainly because financial institutions, commercial banks, and insurance companies especially, were railroads ' main investors. Thanks to New York and other state regulatory authorities ' inclusion of many railroad bond...

The Case for Expanded Shipbuilding Subsidies Remains Wanting
Colin GrabowThe United States, warns anew essay inThe Atlantic, is turning its back on the world ’s oceans with deleterious consequences for the country’s national security. While much of the piece focuses on U.S. naval power, author Jerry Hendrix also highlightsde minimis U.S. commercial shipbuilding as symptomatic of American maritime deterioration. To place the industry back on a solid footing, the former Navy captain urges the adoption of a reinvigorated subsidy regime. Past experience, however, suggests that simply throwing more money at U.S. shipbuilders is unlikely to elevate the industry beyond mediocrity. Equa...

Physicians in crisis: the battle for autonomy and happiness in a broken system
What’s one of the biggest complaints we physicians have about the current state of our jobs? It’s that we’ve lost our autonomy, that it has been taken from us by a health care system more focused on profits than on the well-being of patients and ourselves. As a physician, you know firsthand how dysfunctional health

AI in Healthcare: A Great Add-on, Not a Replacement
There has been this huge rush to implement AI wherever it can be added. And while nothing is wrong with this, it’s important that we don’t loose sight of AI being a tool and not a replacement. There are so many great things that AI can do, such as data gathering, increased pattern recognition, etc. However, it cannot fully nor successfully replace a human. A human touch is very much still needed, not only to get the AI to function as it should but in order for patients to feel comfortable.
So instead of looking for one or the other, it’s important to look for a balance. For a closer look at this balance w...

The Iraq War, 20 Years Later
John MuellerOn Thursday, March 16, we reach the 20th anniversary of the invasion of Saddam Hussein ’s Iraq under the George W. Bush administration. There will be an afternoon ofpanels on that day at Cato reflecting on the event. As the invasion loomed, there was quite a bit of protest both in the United States and around the globe, and a popular placard at some of the protests was one reading, “A village in Texas is missing its idiot.”In his impressive newbook,Confronting Saddam Hussein: George W. Bush and the Invasion of Iraq (Oxford University Press), historian Melvyn Leffler takes strong exception to that...
