A Look at the Hospital Room of the Future at Tampa General Hospital
When healthcare staff approach a hospital room, it’s important to know basic things about the patient like their preferred language, whether they’re in isolation, or whether they’re not supposed to eat (an NPO order). Traditionally, these facts are handled through physical markers or even buried in the patient record. The “digital white board” and “digital door sign” technologies from eVideon display the necessary information automatically where it’s clearly visible and provide a look into what the hospital room of the future looks like powered by technology. Amy Bender, Info...

Dealing with the Elephant in the Waiting Room – Clipboards and Paper Forms
I recently had a visit to the doctor’s office for a routine procedure.  I kid you not that I was asked to complete essentially the same forms 3 different times.  Two times electronically and once on paper.  The staff assured me that the forms were asking different questions.  I frustratingly assured them that 95% of the questions were the same.  It was an awful experience for me as a patient and no doubt for them to have to review 3 different sets of forms.  While not every office is this disorganized, the patient experience when it comes to clipboards and patient forms has a lot to be desired at many healthcar...

Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) Trigger Universal Health Care in America? What do expert Academics say?
By MIKE MAGEE In his book, “The Age of Diminished Expectations” (MIT Press/1994), Nobel Prize winner, Paul Krugman, famously wrote, “Productivity isn’t everything, but in the long run it is almost everything.” A year earlier, psychologist Karl E. Weich from the University of Michigan penned the term “sensemaking” based on his belief that the human mind was in fact the engine of productivity, and functioned like a biological computer which “receives input, processes the information, and delivers an output.” But comparing the human brain to a computer was not exactly a complemen...

Is OMI an ECG Diagnosis?
Written by Jesse McLaren A 70 year old with prior MIs and stents to LAD and RCA presented to the emergency department with 2 weeks of increasing exertional chest pain radiating to the left arm, associated with nausea. The pain recurred at rest 90 minutes prior to presentation, felt like the patient ’s prior MIs, and was not relieved by 6 sprays of nitro. Paramedics provided another 3 sprays of nitro, and 6mg of morphine, which reduced but did not resolve the pain. What do you think of the ECG, and does it matter? There ’s normal sinus rhythm, LAFB, old anterior Q waves, and no diagnostic sign of OMI. I sent th...
