applying to two fellowships
Hi all, So some background: I'm very interested in PEM. It's where I felt happiest and most engaged in residency, so I figured that's what I want to do. I applied last cycle and didn't match. It was a brutal year as I'm sure you know, and an already very competitive PEM fellowship was even more competitive. I have spent the past academic year working all over the place, mostly doing per diem hospitalist work sprinkled in with some newborn nursery, urgent care, and outpatient clinic... Two types of applicants that should not go into nephrology
While I believe that some people go into nephrology for the interest in subject matter, I do believe that the majority who go apply to nephrology are at least hoping that they will be better off financially than a hospitalist, after they make partner. In my humble opinion, there are 2 groups of people who get screwed the hardest and they don't even know they are falling into a trap. 1) I would heavily discourage IMGs with visa issues from trying nephrology. Reason being is that you get... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are Hospitalists Looking at an EM-Style Glut
So this year, myself and all my co-residents that wanted hospitalist jobs found them (except for one that is specific about location, he’s been at it for 7 months and got nothing), but we had a harder time of it than our buddies going into outpatient IM. I’ve seen the projections of a Hospitalist glut in the years to come: [URL... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ten Things Nephrologists Wished Hospitalists Knew?
I found a really great article on generic principles on ID. As a former resident, these are really good knowledge bites that if I had known in intern year I would have been better off for. I was wondering if someone would be willing to do something similar for Nephrology. The Top 10 Things ID Specialists Wish Every Hospitalist Knew In my experience, hospitalists usually have a greater knowledge of antibiotics and treatment of infections than other non-infectious disease (ID) practitioners who manage hospital patients. But that doesn’t stop ID physicians from wanting to m...

Leave or get Terminated after an academic probation period? FM residency
I am a DO in a FM residency program, about to finish my first year in a month. I am about to take my Level 3 within the next few weeks. I had three months of hospitalist [inpt/internal medicine] rotations over the year. However, not performing to the resident standard over this year, especially in the hospital medicine rotation, I have been notified that I have one more month in June to show improvement or I will not be allowed back on the floors. I am working hard, not just for the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hospitalist schedule- no weekends?
Current PGY-2 gearing up for impending clinical practice in a year. Have children and have begun my job search, but just see a smattering of 7/7 postings, or "flexibility allowed". With a family, there is little appeal to the 7off schedule, but significant downside to working every other weekend. Just how common are M-F positions as a hospitalist? I know they say that there is a job for every desired schedule, but just how common is that in today's job climate? How realistic is it... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

SNF job?
Anyone work at a SNF/SNFist/medical director and can share their experience? How do you get started, what is the comp range, are you a medical director and comp range for that job? Sounds like a good, easy way to make extra money on off weeks as a hospitalist. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How Hospitals and CMGs Killed Our EM Small Democratic Group (SDG)
How Hospitals and CMGs Killed Our EM SDG The group I'm with was started by a small group of EM docs several decades ago and was a doctor-owned SDG, initially. They expanded by adding several other ED contracts at other hospitals. Then they added a hospitalist contract and multiple outpatient providers in multiple offices. Then one day, after many years of threats, hospitals started amputating our ED and hospitalists contracts in favor of cheaper CMG labor. 60% of our group was destroyed in... Fellowship for neuro-hospitalist?
Hey all, So fellowship decision time isn't too far away (seems way too soon). At this point I'm 90%+ sure I want to be a neuro-hospitalist - I love being busy in the hospital and do not love clinic. However, I'm not certain I'll want to be a full neuro-hospitalist when I'm in my 50s, etc. I've heard varying perspectives on how best to approach this lifestyle, with some people recommending getting a fellowship to "retire" to, while others telling me a fellowship is a waste of time (or even a... Hi all, wanted to run these 3 opportunities by you and see what you guys think. What is preventing IM from oversupply like EM?
Lots of panic in the EM space right now given their governing bodies concern that by 2030, there will be a 9K physician surplus. My question is simply why is the IM-Hospitalist route not encountering similar struggles. Both fields are hospital based, have "HCA" residencies opening up every year, and are susceptible to midlevel encroachment. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does small IM residency in a small community university affiliated hospital mean lower quality of training for hospitalist work?
Hey guys I unfortunately matched to my #6 IM program which only has 3 residents per year in a community hospital with only 200 beds. The only perk about this program is we have the option to do most of the electives/ subspecialties at our main site that's a top 3 hospital in the nation. I'm wondering would the small hospital affect my inpatient and ICU training negatively? if so, is there anyway I can max my training quality? Thanks in advance! (Source: Student Doctor Network)
