Effects of Health Information Technology and Health Information Exchanges on Readmissions and Length of Stay
This study explored the effects of HIT/HIE on the outcomes and quality of care for diabetes, asthma, acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and hip and knee fracture. 30 day readmissions and average length of stay were used as measures of quality of care. Methods : This study used the HIMSS IT database, coupled with the American Hospital Association (AHA) Hospital survey data and the CMS outpatient and skilled nursing facility Medicare claims data from 2006-2012, along with the standard Medicare file of patient claims for 2006-2012 as the control cohort. Using heirarchical clustering analysis methods, we c...

Talking the Talk: Financial Skills for Nurse Leaders
The importance of effective execution of financial management may be more arguably more relevant today than when first established by the Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA) over a decade ago. Since the 6 key health care agencies (American College Healthcare Executives [ACHE], American College of Physician Executives [ACPE], American Organization of Nurse Executives [AONE], Healthcare Finance Management Association [HFMA], Healthcare Information Management Systems Society [HIMSS], and Medical Group Management Association [MGMA]) convened and identified 5 core competencies shared by all health care leaders. A novel preventative solution for effective asthma management: a practical evaluation
AbstractIn recent years, there has been an increased growth in the use of smart applications to better care and manage various medical conditions. Recent studies have concluded that the daily management via an application improves asthma control compared to manual or paper-based monitoring (Fonseca et al. in Allergy 61(3):389 –390,2006). To this effect, this research aims to study existing asthma applications and propose a holistic approach to asthma care and management by developing a novel Android application that provides a real-time, multi-way communication between patients and providers (healthcare, insurance, food,...

The Relationship Between Magnet Designation, Electronic Health Record Adoption, and Medicare Meaningful Use Payments
The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between nursing excellence and electronic health record adoption. Of 6582 US hospitals, 4939 were eligible for the Medicare Electronic Health Record Incentive Program, and 6419 were eligible for evaluation on the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model. Of 399 Magnet hospitals, 330 were eligible for the Medicare Electronic Health Record Incentive Program, and 393 were eligible for evaluation in the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model. Meaningful use attestation was defined as receipt of a Medicare Electronic Health Record Ince...

The Gap in Medical Informatics and Continuing Education Between the United States and China: A Comparison of Conferences in 2016
Conclusions: Given the size of the Chinese economy and the substantial investment in MI, the output in terms of conferences remains low. The impact of conferences on continuing education to professionals is not significant. Chinese researchers and professionals should approach MI with greater rigor, including validated research methods, formal training, and effective continuing education, in order to utilize knowledge gained by other countries and to expand collaboration. [Evaluating the maturity of IT-supported clinical imaging and diagnosis using the Digital Imaging Adoption Model : Are your clinical imaging processes ready for the digital era?]
Abstract The Digital Imaging Adoption Model (DIAM) has been jointly developed by HIMSS Analytics and the European Society of Radiology (ESR). It helps evaluate the maturity of IT-supported processes in medical imaging, particularly in radiology. This eight-stage maturity model drives your organisational, strategic and tactical alignment towards imaging-IT planning. The key audience for the model comprises hospitals with imaging centers, as well as external imaging centers that collaborate with hospitals. The assessment focuses on different dimensions relevant to digital imaging, such as software infrastruc...

Level of Digitization in Dutch Hospitals and the Lengths of Stay of Patients with Colorectal Cancer
AbstractA substantial amount of research has been published on the association between the use of electronic medical records (EMRs) and quality outcomes in U.S. hospitals, while limited research has focused on the Western European experience. The purpose of this study is to explore the association between the use of EMR technologies in Dutch hospitals and length of stay after colorectal cancer surgery. Two data sets were leveraged for this study; the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAMSM) and the Dutch surgical colorectal audit (DSCA). The HIMSS Analytics EMRAM score was used to define a Dutch h...
