Defining nosocomial transmission of Escherichia coli and antimicrobial resistance genes: a genomic surveillance study
The authors provide evidence of bacterial transmission and endogenous infection during routine care by integrating genomic and epidemiological data and by determining a genetic cutoff informed by within-host diversity in the studied population. The findings challenge single colony-based investigations, and the widely accepted notion of plasmid spread. (Source: Current Awareness Service for Health (CASH))

Fecal Transplants: a New Treatment for IBD
Linda Ann Sasser has had ulcerative colitis since she was 20, but it wasn’t until May 2019, about 30 years later, that her condition hit a low point: not only did she have a major flare-up of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but on top of it, she had Clostridioides difficile (or C. diff), a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhea and inflammation of the colon. “I became really, really sick with bloody diarrhea 30 times a day and chronic stomach pain,” Sasser says. Coating with Hypertonic Saline Improves Virus Protection of Filtering Facepiece Manyfold-Benefit of Salt Impregnation in Times of Pandemic
This study aimed to prove that hypertonic saline effectively reduces the infectious viral load on treated masks. Therefore, a hypertonic salt solution ´ s protective effect on surgical masks was investigated, specifically analyzing the infectivity of aerosolized Alphacoronavirus 1 in pigs (Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus (TGEV)). Uncoated and hypertonic salt pre-coated FFPs were sprayed with TGEV. After drying, a defined part of the mask was rinsed with the medium, and the eluent was used for the infection of a porcine testicular cell line. Additionally, airborne microorganisms ´ long-term infectivity of sodium-chlor...
