Improvements in depressive symptoms following a brief relationship intervention
AbstractIn the United States, 21 million adults are diagnosed with depression. Couple therapy effectively treats depression,  however, couples encounter access barriers. The Relationship Checkup is an assessment and feedback intervention delivered in participants' homes. The current study examines changes in relationship satisfaction and depressive symptoms, and moderators and mechanisms of change in a community sample (N = 85 couples). Changes in depressive symptoms and satisfaction, and the association between changes in satisfaction and depressive symptoms were examined with multilevel modeling. Depressive symptoms...

Autistic Perspectives of Sibling Relationships: Clinical Implications for the Use of Quantitative Measures in Family Autism Research
AbstractPrior research on autistic sibling relationship quality largely ignored autistic sibling perspectives. Researchers continue to prioritize allistic (non-autistic) siblings ’ notions of relationship quality, preventing clinicians from faithfully measuring and supporting the relational well-being of autistic clients. The present study aims to understand adult autistic sibling relationship quality from both the perspective of autistic and allistic siblings, and how the combination of sibling neurocognitive functioning styles in sibling pairs impacts these results. Our sample (N = 211) is from a larger study of co...

Relationship mindfulness, negative relationship quality, and physical health
AbstractRomantic relationships have the potential to be a great source of support or a significant stressor depending on the quality of the relationship. Given the importance of these relationships, it is important to explore possible predictors of relationship quality, primarily if such predictors can be targeted in a clinical setting. Relationship mindfulness, or the propensity to be mindful in the setting of a romantic relationship, is one such option. The current study explored the associations between relationship mindfulness, negative relationship quality, and physical health. An online assessment was completed by 11...

“I'm fighting with BPD instead of my partner”: A dyadic interpretative phenomenological analysis of the lived experience of couples navigating borderline personality disorder
AbstractBorderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with romantic relationship distress and dissolution. The complex interaction between BPD and romantic relationships warrants further attention. Dyadic interviews (N = 10) were conducted to examine the experience and impact of BPD on couples' relationships. The results of interpretative phenomenological analysis consisted of two superordinate themes describing the couple experience of navigating BPD: (a) the shared experience of BPD as a relational stressor ; and (b) adaptive dyadic coping in the context of BPD. Although BPD was experienced as a relational stre...

This study included the experiences of 30 married women who reported spousal pornography use as a threat to relational attachment, who chose to remain with their spouse, and who reported evidence of individual and relational healing thereafter. Shifting the Paradigm: How to Use Reflecting Teams as a Therapeutic Tool in Family Therapy
A reflecting team (RT) is an intervention, developed by Norwegian psychiatrist Tom Andersen, used in family therapy. It supports an integrated, collaborative, and multiperspective view of a family ’s experience. After observing a family therapy session, the team of therapists engage in a discussion driven by their observations as feedback to the family. The family then provides the clinicians with feedback on their observations. RTs are employed in teaching family therapy to psychiatry resi dents and other clinicians in training and serve to provide them with a unique and novel way to conceptualize family dynamics. (Sour...

37.2 Family Therapy for Dysphoric Transgender and Gender-Diverse Youth
Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth experience disproportionately high rates of depression, suicidality, and substance use as compared to their cisgender peers. Family environment and parental behaviors are known factors in the youths ’ well-being, yet family-based interventions targeting mood and gender-related challenges are lacking. This presentation will describe family-focused therapy adapted to these unique clinical needs and present initial data on youth depression, suicidality, and substance use in pilot participants. 82.3 Family Therapy Training Models
Despite knowing that parental psychopathology is paramount in the predisposition to, and manifestation of, child psychopathology, few residents are taught to assess psychopathology in an entire family. Child and adolescent psychiatry training often focuses on identified pediatric patients, with rare formal diagnostic attention given to parents. Residents learn the link between parental and child psychopathology in theory, but rarely in practice. The same can be said for family treatment. Family therapy is highly valued by child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, yet most training programs provide limited teaching and super...
