Could an Implant Be Developed to Help Restore Sight?
Scientists from a biomedical research consortium could help a U.S. government funded program aiming to restore sensory perception. The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) established the Neural Engineering System Design program (NESD) to encourage development of “an implantable neural interface able to provide unprecedented signal resolution and data-transfer bandwidth between the human brain and the digital world,” according to DARPA’s Web site. DARPA has awarded six NESD contracts, one of which was given to CorticalSight, a program by the Seeing and Hearing Foundation (Fondation Voir et Entendre;...

Report: India eyes penalties for Johnson & Johnson over metal-on-metal hips
Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) could reportedly be on the hook again for the metal-on-metal hip implants it pulled from the market in 2010, this time in India and for much less than it’s cost the company elsewhere. The world’s second-largest medical device maker has fielded numerous lawsuits about its ASR metal-on-metal hip replacement since it pulled the ASR XL Acetabular and ASR Hip Resurfacing systems from the market in August 2010, “due to the number of patients who required a second hip replacement procedure, called a revision surgery.” Three years later Johnson & Johnson pulled th...

FDA puts Second Sight Medical ’ s next-gen Orion ‘ bionic eye ’ on the fast track
Second Sight Medical (NSDQ:EYES) said today that the FDA put its Orion “bionic eye” on the fast track to approval. The Orion device is a cortical visual prosthesis that uses a camera and a brain implant to bypass the optic nerve in visually impaired patients. The federal safety watchdog put the device on its expedited access pathway, giving Sylmar, Calif.-based Second Sight priority review, greater interactive review for both its investigational device exemption and pre-market approval bids, plus more emphasis on post-market studies rather than pre-market clinical work. The FDA will also assign a cross-discipli...

The eyes have it: how technology allows you to speak when all you can do is blink
Developments in eye-gaze technology – which converts minute movements of the eye into spoken words – are opening up undreamed of opportunities for people with motor neurone syndromeSteve Thomas and I are talking about brain implants. Bonnie Tyler ’s Holding Out For a Hero is playing in the background and for a moment I almost forget that a disease has robbed Steve of his speech. The conversation breaks briefly; now I see his wheelchair, his ventilator, his hospital bed.Steve, a software engineer, was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a type ofmotor neurone disease) aged 50. He knew it was progre...

Nerve implant 'restores consciousness' to man in vegetative state
Stimulation of the vagus nerve allows patient who has been in a vegetative state for 15 years to track objects with his eyes and respond to simple requestsA 35-year-old man who had been in a vegetative state for 15 years has shown signs of consciousness after receiving a pioneering therapy involving nerve stimulation. The treatment challenges a widely-accepted view that there is no prospect of a patient recovering consciousness if they have been in a vegetative state for longer than 12 months.Continue reading...
