Plastid Transformation in Eggplant
Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is an important vegetable crop of tropical and temperate regions of the world. Here we describe a procedure for eggplant plastid transformation, which involves preparation of explants, biolistic delivery of plastid transformation vector into green stem segments, selection procedure, and identification of the transplastomic plants. Carotenes are ingested as amorphous solids and crystals and breakdown of cellular membranes increases the bioavailability of the carotenes. Breakdown of the walls is often mechanical (e.g. grinding up of the food), but absorption is also affected through pancreatic lipases, thyroid hormone, bile acids, dietary fiber...

Unlikely collaboration leads to discovery of 'gender-bending' plant
(Pensoft Publishers) Bucknell University biology professor Chris Martine has discovered and described a new species of wild eggplant, found in Australia's Lost City. The plant is curiously described as "gender bending," coming from the fact that the females actually pretend to be male by producing pollen. Martine, who named the plant Solanum cowiei, recently detailed his findings in the journal PhytoKeys. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)
