Turning Increased Ambulatory Volumes into Financial Strength: 4 Moves for RCM
The following is a guest article by Pete Heydt, President at Patient Pay Ninety-five percent of healthcare leaders expect outpatient volumes to increase, with many anticipating increases of 10% or more this year, a recent survey found. However, capitalizing on increased activity demands that leaders streamline their operations—including around patient financial engagement and payment—so they can make the investments needed to set themselves apart from the competition.  For example, as outpatient services such as infusions outpace projections, and as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services open the door to mor...

The Future of Digital Health: How UX Design is Shaping the Industry
By PARV SONDHI As the digital health world continues to expand, more and more people are turning to apps to manage everything from diabetes and obesity to depression and anxiety. People rely on these apps for their physical and mental health, so it’s crucial that product developers ensure a safe, effective, and engaging experience for them. Healthcare experts agree. A team of researchers and health system leaders recently introduced a new framework called “Evidence DEFINED” for evaluating digital health products. This framework offers hospitals, payers, and trade organizations a precise set of guidelines to as...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Collecting Data
This article shows how organizations are collecting it. Andrew Eye, CEO of the healthcare data science company ClosedLoop, estimates that about 15% of physicians collect SDoH-related data from patients and use it to assess their needs. The percentage is much higher in some areas. Data can be spotty, according to Eye, who says for instance that data from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) often lacks racial identifications. He also says that collecting and processing the data is labor-intensive, because it can be hard to persuade patients to talk openly about financial and logistical problems. At the institu...

GoodWill ’ s Lessons for Health Care
By KIM BELLARD The New York Times had an interesting profile this weekend about how Goodwill Industries is trying to revamp its online presence – transitioning from its legacy ShopGoodwill.com to a new platform GoodwillFinds — in the amidst of numerous other online resellers.  It zeroed in on the key distinction Goodwill has: But Goodwill isn’t doing this just because it wants to move into the 21st century. More than 130,000 people work across the organization, while two million people received assistance last year through its programs, which include career navigation and skills training. Those opportu...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Defining and Sharing
This article delves deeper into various aspects of data handling, and who is working in these fields. Defining SDoH Lyd Paull-Flores, senior director, healthcare at GCOM, summarizes the social determinants of health in an article: Economic stability Economic access and quality Social community and context Healthcare access and quality Neighborhood and built environment A few different organizations have undertaken to categorize SDoH. The most comprehensive initiative, cited by several of my interviewees, is the Gravity project. Dr. Marc Rabner, chief medical officer of the nonprofit CRISP Shared Services (CSS), is on t...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: An Introduction
It’s always been pretty obvious that factors such as wealth, race, education, and the quality of food and water have enormous impacts on health. But only in the past few years have the medical professions tried to quantify and capture these factors. Given that the field is increasingly digitized and data-driven, health IT is responsible for collecting and analyzing social determinants of health (SDoH). Data can both call out SDoH and help to address its effects. An example of calling out SDoH was cited by Dr. Sherri Onyiego, Medical Director for the Texas Market at Equality Health. They use claims data to track use o...

But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.”Steven Weinberg In 2003, I started a web page that documented the horrors of the Iraq war. The title of the page was corrie.html, because one of the first entries was about Rachel Corrie. This was it. On Sunday, 16th March 2003, a 23-year-old American peace activist, Rachel Corrie, was crushed to death by a bulldozer as she tried to prevent the Israeli army destroying homes in the Gaza Strip. There Needs to Be an “ AI ” in “ Med Ed ”
By KIM BELLARD It took some time for the news to percolate to me, but last month the University of Texas San Antonio announced that it was creating the “nation’s first dual program in medicine and AI.” That sure sounds innovative and timely, and there’s no question that medical education, like everything else in our society, is going to have to figure out how to incorporate AI. But, I’m sorry to say, I fear UTSA is going about it in the wrong way. UTSA has created a five year program that will result in graduates obtaining an M.D. from UT Health San Antonio and a Master of Science in Artificial Intelli...
