Fed Chair Powell ’s Story about Service Price Inflation Is Untrue
Alan ReynoldsInThe Wall Street Journal’s “Year ‐End Review&  Outlook,” Sam Goldfarb deftly summarized a recent shift in the Federal Reserve’s focus away from PCE inflation —which slowed to a 2.4% rate from July to November— to a diverse hodgepodge of services prices.“In recent remarks,Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has emphasized that, even in recent months, there has been only a  modest slowdown in price increases for core services outside of housing. That is an area of the economy seen as most sensitive to labor costs, which have shown few signs of decelerating.”Although Mr. Powell ’s latest s...

Xish
Earlier I discussed the insane excesses of Xi Jinping ' s " zero Covid " policy. The economic and social costs of the draconian, and doomed, effort to end transmission of the virus in China were unsustainable. The policy provoked the first mass protests of his rule, at great peril to the protesters, created supply chain shortages around the world, and severely damaged the Chinese economy. So yeah, not a good idea. But . . .He suddenly turned 180 on a dime and eliminated all mitigations measures. The result has been equally catastrophic. Eric Fiegl-Ding is an epidemiologist who became well known as an early Cassandra about ...

The Illegality of Biden ’s Student Debt Cancellation Plan
ConclusionThe HEROES Act of 2003 is an implausible vehicle for a  nationwide debt cancellation plan, and a careful examination of the act’s text reveals no clear congressional intent to authorize such a sweeping plan. The Biden administration’s student loan cancellation will be challenged in court by many plaintiffs, at least some of whom are likely to hav e standing. And when the action is challenged, it is likely to fall, just as several other dubious claims of statutory authority have fallen over the last two years. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

The New Deal and Recovery, Part 21: Happy Days
George SelginBy the start of 1948, there could no longer be any doubt: the Great Depression wasn ' t coming back. Instead of collapsing at war ' s end, as many feared it would, combined government and private spending (as measured by nominal Gross Domestic Product) hardly budged between 1945 and 1946, and started climbing again thereafter. Consequently, as we ' ve seen, the unemployment rate ended up being as low as it had been in the latter 1920s; and the consumer price level, far from falling again as many feared it would, rose at alarming rates once controls were lifted, settling down by the end of the decade.Nor was th...

This appeared last week:IXUP, homomorphic encryption and the future of data sharingJustin HendryEditor22 August 2022As the sharing of personal identifiable information between government agencies and businesses becomes increasingly commonplace, there is growing risk that data is leaked publicly. The arrival of the Consumer Data Right in 2019 and the passage of legislation that opens a “new path” for public sector data-sharing, more recently, has only accelerated this process in the name of convenience and research. That ’s where secure data software company IXUP, which hoovered up the assets of the collapsed data-shari...
