A Mission to One of the Most Devastated Places in the World
By Josh Skaggs, MD   I went on a medical mission to East Africa’s South Sudan this past January and February. The country is one of the most undeveloped, isolated, and devastated places in the world, and it was an amazing experience even though being there was incredibly tough.   South Sudan and Sudan used to be under the control of Egypt, and were overseen by Great Britain. Great Britain withdrew from Sudan, its former colony, in 1956. Sudan had two regions at that time, the Arab north and the tribal south. War broke out after the northern Sudanese government began killing all non-Arabs in the south who would not “c...

Paget's disease if Nipple- Review
Clinical:Approximately 1% –3% of women with adenocarcinoma of the breast have Paget disease. Clinically-Paget disease has common dermatitis-like appearance, as originally described in 1874, when Sir James Paget recorded that such lesions may resemble “ordinary chronic eczema” or present as nipple erosion or ulceration. Paget disease often has a deceptively banal clinical morphology but should lead the list of differential diagnoses when evaluating unilateral lesions of the nipple–areola complex in adults.Paget disease presenting with nipple erosion. Most women with the histopathologic finding of Paget disease ...

Aveeno versus Clear: Which is better for your scalp?
Steve F says…I have dermatitis and my dermatologist advised me to use an anti-dandruff shampoo. I like both Aveeno Nourish + Dandruff Control and Clear Complete Care, but I’m wondering which is really better for my scalp. The ingredient lists seem quite different, with Clear’s containing a lot more oil and things I can pronounce. But does this really mean it’s better for me? The Beauty Brains respond: Let’s review the ingredients in each product to see if one is better for your scalp than the other. Active drug ingredient This is a little confusing because the Clear website doesn’t clear...

Is the preservative in my body wash bad for skin?
Traci asks (via FaceBook)…Can’t Quaternium-15 be a skin irritant? The Beauty Brains respond: Quaternium-15 is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative commonly used in cosmetics. (We recently mentioned it in our post on Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash.) But is it safe? Pros and cons of a preservative Quaternium-15 is sold in a variety of forms and is commonly used because it’s very effective against a broad-spectrum of microbials including bacteria, fungi, molds. In addition it is cost effective and easy to formulate with. However, a number of studies have shown that it can cause allergic contact derma...

Is Dr. Oz right about Sea Buckthorn for skin?
StarChild says…Is Dr. Oz right? Is Sibu Beauty’s Sea Buckthorn really a miracle skin product? The Beauty Brains respond: Is Sibu Beauty’s product a “miracle?” When it comes to Sea Buckthorn, Dr. Oz may be a Hot Chocolate fan (bonus points to any reader who can identify that reference!) but we’re a bit more skeptical. What is Sea Buckthorn? You can read all about Sibu Beauty’s Sea Buckthorn Nourishing Facial Cream here. Sea Buckthorn (technically known as Hippophaë rhamnoides) is a berry grown in the Himalayas and the website points out that it’s known for being rich in a num...

Poison Oak
Photo from Consultant360.com As the weather heats up and people are hiking and walking animals outdoors, we physicians start seeing the results of a contact dermatitis known as poison oak or poison ivy.  Some of the tell-tell signs for diagnosing this condition is the severe itching, patchy redness that is in certain skin areas only and also notice the linear streak on the top back area of (Source: EverythingHealth)

Do Alzheimer's Medications Work, Who Should Take Them?
Over the years my clients have asked me, “Should my loved one be taking any of the Alzheimer’s medications?” By Bob DeMarco Alzheimer's Reading Room Over the years my answer has differed depending on how much I knew about the medications, the relative costs of the medications, and how much research has been done on the effectiveness of the medications. Here is what I’m saying currently. There are only 5 medicines that the FDA has approved for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. None of the medications cure the disease. None of the medications stop the disease process from continuing on long term,...

Can you make hair dye less irritating by mixing it with artificial sweetener?
Allison asks...Strange questions, but it’s come up often lately. Several cosmetologists and women who dye their hair have indicated that when a client complains that the hair dye tingles or irritates their scalp, the cosmetologist will add 1-2 packets of Nutrasweet (aspartame) to the dye mixture and the effect is minimized. Is this a psychological reaction or does the aspartame interact with the dye chemicals or the peroxide in a way that actually reduces the irritation?? The Beauty Brains respond: Aspartame (technically known as the methyl ester of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide) is a very popular artifi...

Circovirus in Shanghai
Recently thousands of dead and decaying pigs were pulled from rivers in Shanghai and Jiaxing, China. Apparently farmers dumped the animals into the water after the pigs became ill. Porcine circovirus has been detected in the in pig carcasses and in the water. Porcine circoviruses are small, icosahedral viruses that were discovered in 1974 as contaminants of a porcine kidney cell line. They were later called circoviruses when their genome was found to be a circular, single-stranded DNA molecule. Upon entry into cells, the viral ssDNA genome enters the nucleus where it is made double-stranded by host enzymes. It is then tran...
