Adding scents to symbols: using food fragrances with deafblind young people making choices at mealtimes
This article is written by Heather Murdoch, research consultant for the Seashell Trust, Anne Gough, deputy headteacher at Royal School Manchester/Seashell Trust, Eileen Boothroyd, consultant for the Seashell Trust, and Kate Williams, a creative perfumer for Seven (PZ Cussons). It describes the use of food fragrances with deafblind students who are making lunchtime meal choices. The fragrances were added to picture symbols or objects of reference used to represent different menu options. A multiple case study, mixed methods design was used to evaluate three students' choice‐making before and after the introduction of the ...

Field testing of two electronic mobility aid devices for persons who are deaf-blind.
Conclusion: A high satisfaction score on QUEST does not necessarily imply that an assistive device is efficient in all circumstances; follow-up interviews provided important complementary information. Implications for Rehabilitation For people who are deaf-blind The Miniguide is reliable for detecting obstacles (vibrations are sent as a warning when approaching an obstacle). It is often used to know if taking the right route. It identifies entrances or openings (indicated by the vibrations stopping when pointing at a wall), which can replace the echo-location for blind persons with hearing impairments. The Miniguide helped...

Usher protein functions in hair cells and photoreceptors.
Abstract The 10 different genes associated with the deaf/blind disorder, Usher syndrome, encode a number of structurally and functionally distinct proteins, most expressed as multiple isoforms/protein variants. Functional characterization of these proteins suggests a role in stereocilia development in cochlear hair cells, likely owing to adhesive interactions in hair bundles. In mature hair cells, homodimers of the Usher cadherins, cadherin 23 and protocadherin 15, interact to form a structural fiber, the tip link, and the linkages that anchor the taller stereocilia's actin cytoskeleton core to the shorter...

What's in a name: Dual sensory impairment or deafblindness?
Communications about deafblindness within the clinical and research literature are littered with several terms that have not yet been well established or defined, such as deafblindness, dual sensory loss, or combined vision and hearing impairment. Depending on the context (e.g. service delivery for children, adults, or seniors) or the user (e.g. educators, clinicians, researchers, or clients), these terms are sometimes used interchangeably; such practice, however, can be misleading and does not assist the scientific goal of precise communication. The goal of this study was to review the existing definitions of these terms ...

Deafblind People, Communication, Independence, and Isolation
This paper discusses issues related to communication, independence, and isolation for an understudied group of deaf people who also have visual impairments. The discussion is based on the experiences of 28 deafblind people in 6 different countries, obtained from interviews that were carried out as part of a larger research project on travel issues. However, the similarities in experiences between countries were stronger than the differences. In particular, barriers to communication and inadequate support, with resulting problems of isolation and depression, were found in all the countries. Equally, deafblind people in all ...

Development of a case-mix funding system for adults with combined vision and hearing loss
Conclusions: The derived CM funding model for adults with DSL differentiates resource intensity across 9 main groups and in both datasets there is evidence that these CM groups appropriately identify clients based on need for formal and informal support. (Source: BMC Health Services Research)

Comprehensive Carrier Screening and Molecular Diagnostic Testing for Recessive Childhood Diseases
Clinical Scenarios The test is designed both for preconception carrier testing of couples wishing to start a family and for molecular diagnosis in children suspected of being affected by a recessive childhood disease. The published (research) version of the test included 448 childhood recessive illnesses with severe clinical manifestations1. A revised panel is undergoing clinical validation for use as a laboratory developed test (LDT) with an intention of being offered via a laboratory regulated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). The clinical panel contains 595 childhood recessive diseases that are d...
