(ORLANDO) — A newer cholesterol drug, used with older statin medicines, modestly lowered heart risks and deaths in a big study of heart attack survivors that might persuade insurers to cover the pricey treatment more often. Results on the drug, Praluent, were announced Saturday at an American College of Cardiology conference in Florida. It’s the first time a cholesterol-lowering drug has reduced deaths since statins such as Lipitor and Crestor came out decades ago. “It’s the ultimate outcome; it’s what matters to patients,” said study leader Dr. Philippe Gabriel Steg of Hospital Bichat i...

The effect of local and systemic statin use as an adjunct to non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy —A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsSignificant additional clinical and radiographic improvements are obtained after local, but not systemic, statin use as an adjunct to SRP in deep pockets associated with intrabony defects and seemingly with furcation defects; intrasurgical statin application seems similarly beneficial. Confirmation of these results, and especially of the effect size, from other research groups is warranted. (Source: Dental Technology Blog)

Health Care Special Report: KU doc finds cancer hope
After years of treating patients, researching cancer and testing treatments, Tomoo Iwakuma made the discovery of his lifetime: Statins, typically used to lower cholesterol levels, could treat some types of cancer. An associate professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Iwakuma thinks that statins — such as brand names Crestor and Lipitor — could be used to treat 10 to 20 percent of cancer patients with a mutation in a tumor suppressor protein called p53. This mutation is found in… (Source: bizjournals.com Health Care:Pharmaceuticals headlines)

Patient With Chest Pain and Shortness of Breath Shows Standardized Treatment Doesn't Work for All Patients
John, a 65-year-old male, is sitting in a chair in the corner of the room as you and your partner enter his house. John tells you he's the only one home and called 9-1-1 because he can't breathe and his chest is killing him. His skin is ashen and his breathing is rapid. You can palpate a weak irregular pulse and you note his skin is warm and diaphoretic.
