I Know Everything about Pope Francis
Weeks ago I visited PepperoniNip and La Mole in Florida for a brief vacation that included Baltimore Orioles spring training, fried gator tail and elderly people. My ageism diminished significantly after making friends with an 80-something at the ballpark. 89 is the new 75. My return flight to Washington departed on-time at 4 p.m. A hailstorm in Atlanta, where my short layover would be, shut down Atlanta Airport and my plane diverted to tiny Savannah Airport. The captain kept us on the tarmac in hopes that we could be one of the first planes back out to Atlanta when the storm cleared. Now infused with anti-ageism, I chat...

I am not the only one who thinks that Dr. Oz can cause more harm then good
Dr. Oz may know his cardiologist but he sure does not know a thing about dentistry. Previous Dr. Oz dental debacles include bleaching your teeth with lemon juice and preventing gum disease through drinking cranberry juice. He continues the ineptitude by weighing in on the use of amalgam. So here is a great link to an article in Forbes magazine calling out Dr. Oz for his failure to look at the facts. I think the real facts are that Dr. Oz is now more about entertainment then health care.Dr. Oz Is Worried About Your Teeth. Should You Worry Too? (Source: Dental Technology Blog)

Pushin' It: June Goal Support Post & Giveaway
It's my favorite post of the month, because all the good stuff comes in the comments! So we'll have the usual chance to check in with what people are working on and how everyone is doing with their goals, as well as find out who won last month's giveaway. And we have a new giveaway to announce as well. As is the custom with these monthly goal posts, we encourage people to reply to each other's comments and offer support, advice, thoughts, encouragement or whatever.  And to check back to continue conversations or offer progress reports if feeling so inclined. The theme this month is: Pushin' It! Which coincidentally...

Self-Managing Cholesterol
By David Spero As a recent study indicates, reducing LDL (“bad" cholesterol) can help prevent complications in most people with diabetes. Why is LDL cholesterol a bad thing, and how do you get to a healthy level? First, what is cholesterol? Discovered in 1769 by analyzing gallstones, cholesterol is a fat-like organic chemical that is an essential part of animal cell membranes. Without it, cells won't function properly. Cholesterol is made into bile, which is needed for digesting fats. It is also helps produce the body's natural steroids, including our sex hormones and the vital stress hormone cortisol. Cholesterol ...

Cash-Strapped Americans Delaying Dental Care, Despite Knowing the Long-Term Implications
Consumers More Likely to Put off Dental Visits than Medical, New Survey ShowsSyracuse, NY – More than one in three American adults (36 percent) has delayed or will delay dental care due to the uncertain U.S. economy and their lingering fears about their current financial situation, and they are making that decision despite understanding the long-term implications: more than 80 percent indicated that they knew that delaying dental care would cost them more in the long run. The survey of more than 1,000 adults was conducted by ORC International and commissioned by Aspen Dental. Other key survey findings hint at why ...

Create the Habits of Being Lean, in 7 Years
By Leo Babauta People want to lose weight really fast (myself included). We fantasize about having a flat stomach, a leaner body, in just weeks. Two weeks would be ideal. Search for “weight loss” in Amazon and you’ll find books that will show you how to “lose weight fast” or in a certain number of weeks, like 8 weeks, 4 weeks, even 2 weeks. Of course, that’s bunk. Let’s take a closer look at what it would take to lose weight in 4 weeks: About 2/3 of American adults are overweight or obese, and have more than 20 lbs. to lose. If you’re trying to lose 20 lbs. in 4 weeks, ...

The Anatomy of a Merl’s Diner Catfish Plate…
My dearest sweet mother just stopped by with supper – a Merl’s Diner catfish plate. She got the fried shrimp and was headed home to eat while it was still hot.  Maggie is about to go nuts for a bite or two. I’ll give her a few bites, but the rest is mine.  Maggie will probably get most of the fries. Listening to The Cranberries “Bury the Hatchet” (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

Experiencing the revolving door of physicians in the hospital
Complications from my cancer sent me to the hospital again recently. The news that I was in trouble came unexpectedly from my oncologist’s office Thanksgiving eve, following a routine blood test. “Your liver numbers are out of whack.” My response was “Really?” as if I’d been notified that my driver’s license had expired.I was diagnosed with a blocked bile duct and I missed the turkey and cranberry sauce. My oncologist called in a gastroenterologist, who scheduled a procedure to open the blocked duct. But my tissues were too distorted to complete the procedure, so the next day an interventional radiologist ins...

10 Reasons to Love Dried Cranberries!
The Cranberry Institute asked me to review some of their data and blog about it. As a huge fan of cranberries, I was happy to check it out and share it with you! Are Dried Cranberries OK? I love cranberries in all forms. I have used cranberry juice in salad dressing, smoothies, and marinades. I have used fresh cranberries to make a compote to add flavor and nutrients to foods from fish to asparagus to oatmeal. I love using dried cranberries for a sweet snack – a real fruit snack! I’ve topped fiber-rich cereal with dried cranberries and used dried cranberries as an ingredient in my homemade granola for yummy yog...

Nuvosa Skin Care: In the Beauty Brains Bathroom
Can I tell you how sick and tired I am of hearing anti-aging claims from companies that don’t provide ANY data to back up what they say? That’s why it was so refreshing to find that the samples of Nuvosa skin care that I received were accompanied by actual test data showing how well their products work. If you aren’t familiar with Nuvosa, they offer  a Deep Wrinkle Remedy, a Reborn Moisturizer and a Flawless Toner. You can learn more here at Nuvosa.com. Nuvosa test data According to their data, at the end of a 28 day study here’s what the women said: 94%  agreed  skin  is  hydrated. 90%  of ...
