Recurrent UTI in Women –Risk Factors and Management
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in women; more than 50% of women will be diagnosed with a UTI in her lifetime. Many of these women will go on to develop recurrent UTI. Nevertheless, evidence-based prevention of recurrent UTI is under-utilized. Here, the authors provide detailed practical advice on UTI prevention with a thorough review of the evidence. Non-antibiotic prevention measures discussed include increased fluid intake, vaginal estrogen therapy, methenamine, and cranberry. Antibiotic prophyalxis for carefully selected patients is also discussed. (Source: Infectious Diseases Clinics of North America)

Determination of benzoate in cranberry and lingonberry by using a solid-contact benzoate-selective electrode
Talanta. 2024 Apr 2;274:125996. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2024.125996. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBenzoic acid is used as a preservative in processed food, and occasionally in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, while benzoic acid occurs naturally in, e.g., cranberry and lingonberry. Therefore, the determination of benzoate is of interest for product quality assurance, food safety, and personal health. In this work, a solid-contact benzoate-selective electrode (benzoate-ISE) was developed by utilising poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as solid contact and a solvent polymeric membrane containing a 1,3-bis(carbazolyl)urea ...

Not Even a Ribbon for Intestinal Failure
Possibly the most complex and heterogenous disease known to mankind, intestinal failure, had neither recognition nor a colored ribbon. There was no disease code in the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10CM) or ICD-11 for either intestinal failure or short bowel syndrome until October 1, 2023; still, there is no ribbon. All the primary color ribbons have been taken —even burgundy, cranberry, peach, and pink; light blue, dark blue, navy blue, and even Robin’s egg blue; jade, light green, lime green, and mint green; cream, copper, and brown—yes brown: it’s antitobacc...

Acute Uncomplicated UTIs in Adults: Rapid Evidence Review
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Feb;109(2):167-174.ABSTRACTAn acute uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection of the lower urinary tract with no sign of systemic illness or pyelonephritis in a noncatheterized, nonpregnant adult with no urologic abnormalities or immunocompromise. In women, a self-diagnosis of a UTI with the presence of typical symptoms (e.g., frequency, urgency, dysuria/burning sensation, nocturia, suprapubic pain), without vaginal discharge, is accurate enough to diagnose an uncomplicated UTI without further testing. Urine culture and susceptibility testing should be reserved for women wi...

Assessing the Gut Microbiota's Ability to Metabolize Oligomeric and Polymeric Flavan ‐3‐ols from Aronia and Cranberry
In this study, the capacity of 34 donors to metabolize polymeric B-type flavan-3-ols from aronia and oligomeric A-type flavan-3-ols from cranberry is investigated by in vitro fecal batch ferme ntations. Less than 1% of the flavan-3-ols from both sources are converted into microbial metabolites, such as phenyl-γ-valerolactones (PVLs). To further confirm this result, gut microbial metabolites from flavan-3-ols are quantified in urine samples collected from participants, before and after a 4-day supplementation of cranberry extract providing 82.3 mg of flavan-3-ols per day. No significant difference is observed in the urina...

Dietary Supplement Use in Transmasculine People: Results of an Online Survey of Volunteer Adults
CONCLUSION: Transmasculine people in our study reported a high use of dietary supplements. Differences in the types of products and number of products used, as well as specific motivations for use likely exist within this subpopulation, however, future nationally-representative longitudinal studies are needed to fully elucidate these patterns and for informing evidence-based nutrition guidance.PMID:38343146 | DOI:10.1080/19390211.2024.2316162 (Source: Journal of Dietary Supplements)

Use of Methenamine for Urinary Tract Infection Prophylaxis: Systematic Review of Recent Evidence
ConclusionsThe use of methenamine for UTI prophylaxis was shown to be effective in a variety of settings without an increased risk of adverse effects compared with prophylactic antibiotics. Larger blinded clinical trials are needed to further define the role of methenamine in UTI prophylaxis. (Source: International Urogynecology Journal and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction)
