Not Your Average (Flavi)Virus: Clinical and Epidemiologic Investigations of Zika Virus in Puerto Rico
LCID - Wednesday Research Conference Following the introduction of Zika virus into Puerto Rico in late 2015,>38,000 laboratory-positive cases have been reported to public health authorities to date. Due to unexpected routes of transmission and severe clinical complications associated with Zika virus infection, research studies in Puerto Rico have included: conducting facility-based enhanced surveillance to better define the spectrum of Zika virus disease and associated complications; establishing a prospective cohort of infected individuals to estimate the duration of Zika virus shedding in various body fluids; and case-co...

Curing HIV infection: going beyond N=1
Immunology Interest Group Seminar Series The latent reservoir for HIV is a major barrier to curing HIV infection. This talk will discuss recent studies of the mechanism by which the reservoir arises, the mechanism by which it is maintained, and approaches for measuring the reservoir in patients participating in HIV cure trials. Dr. Robert F. Siliciano is a Professor of Medicine and Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In 1995, his laboratory provided the first demonstration that latently infected memory CD4+ T cells were p...

Virtual Clinical Trials: Modernizing Comparative Studies
The NIAID Office of Cyber Infrastructure and Computational Biology (OCICB) is pleased to host our annual 2016 Bioinformatics& Computational Biosciences Festival, Virtual Clinical Trials: Modernizing Comparative Studies. The clinical trials process is a key, but very costly, requirement for getting drugs and vaccines approved for use in the medical field. Virtual clinical trials (VCTs) replace one component of the trial with technology (i.e. digital patients, sites, investigators), and are a radical departure from the way traditional double-blinded placebo randomized controlled trials are conducted. While the traditional me...
