Verato and CLEAR Come Together to Accelerate Adoption of Digital Identities in Healthcare
The HLTH conference is full of big announcements from various health IT companies.  One of the most interesting announcements I saw at HLTH 2023 was a strategic partnership between identity companies Verato and CLEAR.  I was really intrigued by this new partnership because far too often in healthcare two companies that are working in similar spaces choose to compete to the death rather than collaborating together.  I love to see these two companies come together to work on one of the hardest problems in healthcare: identity management. To learn more about the partnership between Verato and CLEAR, we sat down to chat wit...

Ball Changes Shape with Breath for Mental Health Management
Researchers at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom have developed a shape-shifting ball that can inflate and deflate in response to someone’s breath. The idea is an advancement of many techniques designed to help people de-stress and manage their mental health, which all focus on awareness of the breath. For instance, mindfulness meditation often requires people to focus on their own breath, which can help to reduce anxiety and stress, but maintaining this focus is difficult. The ball, which the researchers call the Physical Artefact for Well-being Support (PAWS), is designed to be held in the hands, and sensors...

Questions grow about the validity and usefulness of direct-to-consumer blood tests for Alzheimer ’s Disease
For the first time, people worried about their risk of Alzheimer’s disease can go online, order a blood test, and receive results in the privacy of their homes. This might seem appealing on the surface, but the development has Alzheimer’s researchers and clinicians up in arms. The Quest Diagnostics blood test, AD-Detect, measures elevated levels of amyloid-beta proteins, a signature characteristic of Alzheimer’s. Introduced in late July, the test is targeted primarily at people 50 and older who suspect their memory and thinking might be impaired and people with a family history of Alzheimer’s or genetic risks for t...

How Do You See Health Data Utilities Evolving? Where are We Today and Where is it Heading?
Health data utility is still a fairly new concept in the world of healthcare. But as we talk about it, more and more HIE organizations have started to use it and the concept has been embraced by many. This naturally made it a hot topic at the recent Civitas Conference. We gathered up some of our brilliant members of the Healthcare IT Today Community to get their perspective. How are health data utilities evolving? Where are we now with it and where do we see it heading? We’ve compiled their answers in this video below! Lindsey Ferris, DrPH, Senior Interoperability and Public Health Director at PointClickCare –...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Collecting Data
This article shows how organizations are collecting it. Andrew Eye, CEO of the healthcare data science company ClosedLoop, estimates that about 15% of physicians collect SDoH-related data from patients and use it to assess their needs. The percentage is much higher in some areas. Data can be spotty, according to Eye, who says for instance that data from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) often lacks racial identifications. He also says that collecting and processing the data is labor-intensive, because it can be hard to persuade patients to talk openly about financial and logistical problems. At the institu...

GoodWill ’ s Lessons for Health Care
By KIM BELLARD The New York Times had an interesting profile this weekend about how Goodwill Industries is trying to revamp its online presence – transitioning from its legacy ShopGoodwill.com to a new platform GoodwillFinds — in the amidst of numerous other online resellers.  It zeroed in on the key distinction Goodwill has: But Goodwill isn’t doing this just because it wants to move into the 21st century. More than 130,000 people work across the organization, while two million people received assistance last year through its programs, which include career navigation and skills training. Those opportu...

Interview with Infermedica CEO, Piotr Orzechowski
At the HLTH conference Matthew Holt talked with CEO of Infermedica, Piotr Orzechowski, and also had a quick word with VP of Marketing Marcus Gordon. Infermedica has been around over a decade, and has been a slow burner in the symptom checker and patient digital front door market. But now it has a lot of clients and deals and its API is hiding behind several big names including Optum & Microsoft. Piotr graciously let me butcher his name, and still told me about how their model works and how LLMs will change it. (Source: The Health Care Blog)

Dichotomy Was the Through Line at AHIMA23
Dichotomy of Healthcare Dr. Zeev Neuwirth opened the 2023 American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA23) conference and spoke about the dichotomy of healthcare. He shared with the audience that is simultaneously frustrated at and excited by our industry. On the frustrating side, clinicians have more regulations, financial uncertainty, and workload to deal with than ever before. These pressures are leading to an increase in moral injury (Dr Neuwirth’s preferred term for burnout) which is resulting in more clinicians leaving the profession. Dr. Neuwirth shared an especially poignant story of a colleague who t...

The “Green Pope” Loves Science and Is Cautious of AI
By MIKE MAGEE By all accounts, they were mutually supportive. He was three years older and the chief scientific adviser to the world’s most powerful religious leader. The Scientific American called him “the greatest scientist of all time,” and not because he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry a decade earlier for explaining the nuts and bolts of ozone formation. It was his blunt truthfulness and ecological advocacy that earned the organization’s respect. Paul Crutzan is no longer alive. He died on February 4, 2021 in Mainz, Germany at the age of 87. What attracted the 86 year old “Green Pope” to Paul were t...
