Evolutionary Dynamics of SARS-CoV-2
This is the annual Dewitt Stetten Jr. Lecture. Speaker Trevor Bedford, Ph.D., is Associate Professor, Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division; Associate Professor, Herbold Computational Biology Program; and Associate Professor, Human Biology Division, Fred Hutch. Bedford uses powerful computers and complex statistical methods to study the rapid spread and evolution of viruses, including those that cause COVID-19, influenza, Ebola and Zika. Data gathered from these processes help researchers develop successful strategies for monitoring and controlling infectious diseases. For more information go tohttps://oir.nih.gov/walsAir...

Reading Between the Tweets: Social Technologies for Predicting and Changing Health Behavior
This talk is part of the Integrative Medicine Research Lecture Series presented by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Social technologies — for example, social media, mobile apps, internet searching, and wearable sensors — and the data they produce are increasingly being used as tools in public health research and practice. More than half of the world (4.5 billion people) is using social media sites to create, share, and discuss content. Social media users are not just sharing trivial facts, but publicly telling the world personal things about their thoughts, behaviors, and clinical diagnos...

Water-air Interface of Acidic Solutions
An image from a molecular dynamics computer simulation of the water-air interface of acidic solutions. The acid molecule (hydronium ion, shown in orange) has a counterintuitive tendency to prefer the interface instead of remaining buried deeper in the liquid region. More about this ...This is an NSF Multimedia Gallery item. (Source: NSF Multimedia Gallery)

Acoustic wave resonating in the interior of the sun
A computer-generated image showing an acoustic wave resonating in the interior of the sun. Similar to a sound wave when it moves through the air, the solar acoustic wave moves through the gaseous sun in the form of alternating zones of compression and rarefaction. At the same time they displace ...This is an NSF Multimedia Gallery item. (Source: NSF Multimedia Gallery)

Harnessing Synthetic Biology and Deep Learning to Address the COVID-19 Pandemic
Dr. Collins is developing innovative ways to reprogram organisms, particularly bacteria, to perform desired tasks, such as detecting and treating infections. These programmed bacteria could lead to cheaper drugs, rapid diagnostic tests, and more effective treatments for antibiotic-resistant infections and a range of complex diseases. This work is part of the new field of synthetic biology, which Jim founded by combining science and engineering to construct biological circuits that can program organisms, much like we program computers now.Air date: 12/17/2020 12:00:00 PM (Source: Videocast - All Events)
