Pandemic Preparedness and Response: Lessons from COVID
In less than three years, the novel coronavirusSARS-CoV-2 has caused more than half a billion cases of COVID-19 and nearly six and a half million deaths globally. Through longstanding investments in basic research and well-developed clinical trial networks, NIAID made major contributions to the development of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics, in record time. However, a combination of waning vaccine immunity and the repeated emergence and spread of SARS-CoV-2 variants with enhanced transmissibility and immune evasiveness have led to the need for booster shots and updated vaccines more closely aligned wi...

Critical Questions for Pragmatic Clinical Trialists: Insights From the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory ’ s First Decade - Day 2
This workshop, which will take place on 2 half-days, will explore questions that are critical to designing and implementing pragmatic clinical trials (PCTs) conducted within health care systems. Pragmatic trials differ from traditional more-explanatory clinical trials, as they test interventions or practices delivered in real-world settings. The NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory has now been supporting PCTs for a decade, including a set of trials in the PRISM (Pragmatic and Implementation Studies for the Management of Pain to Reduce Opioid Prescribing) program of the Helping to End Addiction Long-term ® Initiative, or NI...

Advancing Research on Emotional Well-Being and Regulation of Eating
Given the rising levels of global stress, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, loneliness and mental health problems are on the rise, adding to the burden of chronic diseases. Most health-oriented research takes a harm-reduction approach, i.e., identifying and mitigating problems to reduce disease burden. Understanding and promoting emotional well-being (EWB) may yield another important strategy to accomplish this and significantly improve people ’ s health. Little has been known about how to best increase EWB in ways that also improve health.Dr. Epel is principal investigator of a new research network to develop resources...
