Weekend Recipe: A Stress-Busting Smoothie
I designed this smoothie for myself due to my busy work schedule, and hectic work environment. My immune system was low and my cortisol levels were high, so I needed to pay more attention to my heatlth and get my own wellbeing back on track. This smoothie is my ultimate healthy breakfast. It provides sustained energy, supports my immune system, my digestive system and is rich in protein and antioxidants. It takes just one minute to make and any leftovers can be taken to work and enjoyed as a snack or light meal the same day. Adding protein in my smoothies helps to keep me full all morning and it also aids my concentration ...

Weekend Recipe: Healthy Hot Cross Buns for Easter
Delicious and indulgent, this classic recipe combines aromatic spices with honey and citrus flavors to create hot cross buns that melt in your mouth and are perfect for Easter morning. These hot cross buns are made from the perfect balance of wholemeal spelt and rye flour, similar to how my great Polish aunt used to make her brioche. The dough is enriched with good quality extra-virgin olive oil that marries perfectly with the sophisticated and robust flavor of the rye. I’ve then added generous amounts of plump raisins and dried apricots so that each mouthful has a burst of flavor. Make a double batch because thes...

Weekend Recipe: Quinoa With Roasted Pumpkin, Zucchini and Basil Pesto
When I cook dinners at home, I often like to enjoy leftovers for lunch the next day. It’s probably the main reason why I like to double this particular recipe, so I have a grab-and-go healthy meal over the next few days and I don’t have to fuss too much in the kitchen. I love that I can easily adapt the vegetables I use based on the season. Combinations such as roasted pumpkin and zucchini or asparagus and fresh peas work really well, and then all you have to do is fold through a little quinoa and serve with a generous spoonful of basil pesto. Quinoa can be prepared very quickly, contains protein and is gluten...

Weekend Recipe: A Delicious and Gluten-Free Banana Bread
There is something magical and comforting about banana bread served lightly warm or toasted alongside your favorite latte. What I love about this recipe is its simplicity and the use of delicious ingredients that are good for you. On my website, I always discuss using high-quality ingredients in your meals. Cooking to me is about quality foods that are lovingly prepared in order to nourish your body. Weekend Recipe: Steel-Cut Oats and Chai Porridge
The cold weather inspires me to nourish myself with warm foods and there’s no better warm, comfort food than porridge. I love the creamy and chewy texture of steel-cut oats, slowly simmered with warming aromatics such as vanilla bean, cinnamon and ginger. You can also add other spices or fruits such as smashed banana or diced apple. When serving this porridge, it’s important to have an extra pot of steaming hot milk on the side, ready to pour over. I think serving with hot milk is probably the most important rule in porridge making as it allows all the flavours to come together in perfect balance. You can serv...

Weekend Recipe: A Healthy Carrot Cake
I designed my healthy carrot cake recipe when I opened The Healthy Chef Café in Avalon Beach in Sydney, Australia. It was a hangout for moms, kids, yogis, supermodels and pro surfers — a place where a variety of people could get nourished and feel great. This cake has over one pound of fresh grated carrot, so it’s packed with goodness and fiber. The large amount of carrots in this recipe also helps to keep the cake moist, which is important due to the longer baking time. When making gluten-free cakes, I find ground almonds make a great replacement for the usual white refined flours that you’ll find...

E-cigarette flavors are toxic to white blood cells, warn scientists
(Frontiers) A new study adds to growing evidence on the harmful health effects of e-cigarettes. The study finds that exposure to commonly used e-cigarette flavoring chemicals and liquids can cause significant inflammation to monocytes, a type of white blood cell. Moreover, many flavoring compounds are toxic, with cinnamon, vanilla and buttery flavors among the worst. It also finds that mixing e-cigarette flavors has a much worse effect than exposure to just one. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)
