3.56 cGPA/3.55 sGPA, 506 MCAT/518 MCAT chances?
My stats are above. I'm a VA resident, Asian male. Not a spectacular GPA, but made up for my low MCAT with a second try. I attended one of the Ivies (located at NY), majored in Bio. I feel like I have a shot at an MD so here goes. 400+ hours of clinical experience. 100 of those are at an emergency center abroad. 60+ hours of shadowing (anesthesiologist, cardio-thoracic surgeon, emergency med, internal med, family medicine) 100+ hours of clinical volunteering, 2 years of non-clinical... 3.56 cGPA/3.55 sGPA, 506 MCAT/518 MCAT chances? Best Short Electives
Hey all - Fourth year here looking for ideas for good elective rotations. I have to fill a three week spot and a two week spot. I want to get the most out of these last weeks of zero responsibility. I'm going into internal med, interested in cards. Have done lots of medicine months and all cores, just finishing cardiovascular surgery and doing radiology after. Thinking nephro, neuro, urgent care or pain clinic, but please if you have better recs - let me have 'em! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Elective Surgery and Decreased GFR
I routinely see patients with GFRs less than 60 in the preop holding area. These patients are typically elderly but asymptomatic for both renal and Cardiovascular disease. Some are having moderate to major surgery. Our current approach is to proceed with the case if their mets are over 4 and they asymptomatic. Recent evidence strongly suggests a deceased GFR is associated with higher postop morbidty and mortality.... Elective Surgery and Decreased GFR (Source: Student Doctor Network)

rib fractures
I have gotten a few calls on these from PCPs/surgeons. Asking if "I can do a block". In house we used to do thoracic epidural catheters and/or intercostal nerve block with liposomal bupvicaine when I was an anesthesia resident. Anything reasonable to offer these people outpatient? Just seems nothing would last long enough to be meaningful...Are you guys doing paravertebrals/intercostals/something else? Or just telling them tincture of time? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cardiovascular vs Cardiothoracics
I am panning to go to Mass Gen for my intern and residency program, but they say that you have to choose between cardiothoracic and cardiovascular for the fellowship program. Which one should I do? What is the pros and cons of both? Are there diferent surgeries involved? If so, what are they? If not, what are some basic surgeries that a cardiothoracic/cardiovasular surgeon does? Hey guys, I've been a long time member but I made a new account today since half my class knows my screen name I am an OMS-II and I have been interested in trauma surgery for a while but I was told by our EM physician that they dont do much trauma as much as oversee the ICU and general surgery cases. I-6 Thoracic Surgery (non-cardiac) lifestyle
im an MS-3 and up until this week I had pretty much no idea what I wanted to do. I had been toying with the idea of a residency in Medicine with ultimate fellowship in Cardiology or Pulmonology (both interventional) versus Thoracic surgery either integrated or through more traditional General Surgery means. I absolutely loved my Thoracic surgery rotation but my biggest concern is the lifestyle as an attending. I would like to mostly or occasionally have weekends off. I would also like to... possible to be a Surgeon-Scientist?
Hi, I was wondering if it is a possible path to be a surgeon-scientist (like physician-scientist), where you do, say 70-30 or 60-40 clinic / surgery - research. Like a cardiothoracic surgeon seeing patients and doing cardiovascular genetics research and lung cancer research, or an orthopaedic surgeon researching tissue engineering, etc. To be a surgeon with time spent researching advancing fields, like CRISPR-CAS9, and immunology? Is it possible to have this as a career? Thanks (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How is hospital shadowing in Czech Republic?
Hi guys, I want to get some practical experience in medicine, before applying to university specifically in cardiovascular surgery and spinal surgery, so I decided to partake in some hospital placements program. When I was doing my research I stumbled upon this program called Czech Hospital Placements Program on facebook. It seems very convenient that you can decide which specialty you want to focus on, so there is the possibility to spend one week... How is hospital shadowing in Czech Republic? Thinking of pursuing Dentistry.
So i've been pursuing Medicine since i was a young really or been steered down that road. Grandfather was a general surgeon, not that necessarily has that much influence. Didn't really know that i wanted to do the whole medicine route until my junior year, shadowing a cardiovascular surgeon in South Carolina. It opened my eyes to medicine and i finally found the spark i was looking for. That gut feeling, adrenaline rush, and pure excitement that is indescribable that i felt was missing... Choosing a surgical specialty
Hi all, I'm at a Canadian medical school and my third year surgery rotation consists of a mandatory 3 weeks of gen surg and then another 3 weeks of ONE of the following: CV surgery, thoracic surgery, plastics, ortho, uro, vascular or neuro. I'm having a particularly hard time picking a specialty. As of now, as a career choice, I'm leaning towards general surgery. I've been exposed to a lot of surgical oncology, and it seems to be what I'm most interested in. The only exposure I've... Choosing a surgical specialty (Source: Student Doctor Network)
