Genetics at the maternal-placental-fetal interface: insights into fetal growth and cardiometabolic health.
The early life period is critical for long term health. Fetal growth abnormalities and cardiometabolic diseases are interconnected and cause high burden of morbidity. Understanding the complex genetic and environmental factors that underlie these relationships is crucial to developing preventive and therapeutic interventions for maximizing health across the life span. The placenta is critical for fetal development and potentially underlies later onset diseases, but it is understudied. Moreover, to date, perinatal genomic studies have failed to capture human ancestral diversity, which impedes biological understanding of dis...

2023 Stephen E. Straus Lecture: Novel Insights Into Heart-Brain Interactions and Neurobiological Resilience
Ahmed Tawakol, M.D., Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, will deliver the 2023 Stephen E. Straus Distinguished Lecture in the Science of Complementary Therapies. In his talk, Dr. Tawakol will review how neural pathways related to stress and depression result in cardiovascular diseases. Many studies have shown that stress and depression are associated with heightened amygdalar activity relative to regulatory activity in the cortex. Multisystem research has shown that increased stress-neural network activity triggers sympathetic system activity and induces leukopoiesis, resulting in systemic inflammati...

Advancing Health Equity Through Culture-Centered Dietary Interventions to Address Chronic Diseases Virtual Workshop (Day 2)
Goals and Key Audience: Objectives: 1. Identify gaps and opportunities for research on the cultural adaptation of evidence-based dietary approaches (e.g., DASH and Mediterranean Diet) to address diet-related diseases in racial/ethnic populations; 2. Understand dietary acculturation and its influence on the development and effectiveness of dietary interventions among diverse immigrant populations; 3. Interrogate the influence of dietary acculturation on the gut microbiome, and understand gut microbiome response to traditional and evidence-based diets. Need and Justification: Adherence to evidence-based dietary approaches, s...

Advancing Cardiovascular Health Equity Through Culture-Centered Dietary Interventions: Research Gaps and Opportunities (Day 2)
Adherence to evidence-based dietary approaches, such as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and Mediterranean diet, is associated with a multitude of health benefits, including lowered blood pressure, improved lipid profiles, reduced cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence, and decreased risk of type 2 diabetes.1-5 Also, adherence to healthy dietary patterns is associated with decrease risk for several cancers and cancer mortality. 6, 7 Yet, the strength of these associations varies by race and ethnicity, though results have been inconsistent; and there are racial and ethnic differences in adherence to t...
