How to be convincing
The objective should be to discover what is true. Truth is more important than being right. Don’t fall in love with your own ideas. Always keep an open mind and adjust your thinking based on new evidence. Seeking out disconfirming evidence can only strengthen your argument. If what you believe is true, then you’ll be prepared to refute any argument against you. This will make you much more convincing. And if you find something that makes you doubt your position, at least you know you need to change your position. You should ALWAYS be able to answer the question, what evidence would convince me that my position ...

5 Reasons Sulfate-Free Products Exist
Have you ever wondered why companies sell sulfate free products?  If there is some safety issue with sulfates, why do companies continue to sell those products?  Why would L’Oreal sell a sulfate free shampoo and also a sulfate containing shampoo? It all comes down to marketing…mostly. Interest in sulfate free A while back I was interviewed by a reporter at Teen Vogue about sulfate free products. It’s a good article and for the most part, my views on sulfate free products were properly portrayed. There was a fair amount of fear mongering from some of the other experts they quoted, but that’s not un...

Understanding US FDA Regulations for Cosmetic Color Additives
I always suggest a review of regulations as the first step in selecting color additives for use in making cosmetics. Colorant regulations can limit the use to certain cosmetic applications and percentages and can also vary by the country in which the product is sold. I recently watched a formulator scramble to replace D&C Red 7 Lake in an eye shadow color at the last minute after realizing it’s not permitted for eye area use in the United States.  US Color Regulations There are two important definitions to consider when interpreting the color additive regulations for cosmetics.  These include the terms ‘cosme...

The challenges of formulating a natural cosmetic line
Conclusion While creating truly natural products can be challenging, it can be done demonstrated by successful brands like Burts Bees, Aveeno, and Physicians Formula. It requires you to figure out what your consumer believes is natural then make products that adhere to those natural standards. After that, success is just a matter of good marketing. Can you use diaper rash cream as sunscreen? Episode 162
Can you use diaper rash cream as sunscreen? Mari asks…Today a customer came into the retail pharmacy where I work and demanded that we sell him zinc oxide diaper rash paste so he could use it as sunscreen. His rationale was that diaper rash paste has a higher percentage of zinc oxide than zinc oxide sunscreens. Although this is sometimes true, depending on the brand, my concern is that (a) the formulation of a diaper rash pa...
