Would you use spray on nail polish? Episode 109
In this study, researchers looked at a variety of products to see how well they repelled mosquitos. Here’s what they found. DEET worked. It provided protection for 240 min or more. And it was dose dependent. More DEET, better protection. The Cutter product with oil of lemon eucalyptus which has a high concentration of p-methane-3-8-diol also worked. This would be a good alternative for people afraid of DEET. Other products like Avon Skin-so-soft bath oil and skin-so-soft with bug guard had practically no effect. Neither did the EcoSmart organic insect repellent which is made up of different oils like rosemary oil, lemong...

Are beauty programs for cancer patients dangerous? Episode 107
Support the Beauty Brains by signing up for a free trial at Audible.com. Quick follow up on curly hair Last time we talked about how to moisturize curly hair. That generated a ton of discussion on our website. I wanted to give you one quick update which is an article I stumbled across about using combing creams to moisturize curly hair. These are essentially a detangled mixed with a styling cream and if they’re properly formulated they’re really good at controlling frizz and defining curls. The funny thing is the article which was published in Glamor of September 2015, talks about combing creams as if they’re a bran...

Beware beauty products in jars – Episode 106
Support the Beauty Brains by signing up for a free trail at Audible.com. Is Rodan and Fields really different? Dawn asks…
I’m interested in getting your opinion on whether or not Rodan and Fields is different from any other skin care line. My gut says they are the same.  I participated in a virtual information session (my friend wants me to join her team) and all the other consultants raved about the products as if nothing else had ever worked for them before.  I feel the price point is high. And to be frank, my degree is in chemistry and I recently closed my own skin care business.  So, when I received some...

Support the Beauty Brains by signing up for a free trail at Audible.com. Does bee venom cause eye puffiness?  Tune in to listen to Perry’s amazing story to find out. (Hint: check out the picture.) Is amniotic fluid the next hot anti-aging ingredient? Have you heard about this new trend in skin care? Amniotic fluid. Well, at least that is what is being claimed by this story in Stylecaster. Or is it? The headline to the story is “Amniotic Fluid is a Growing Trend in Skin Car”. So I thought right away that I would be reading a story about amniotic fluid in beauty products. Which seems pretty weird to me. How could...

How do you moisturize curly hair? Episode 104
Question of the week: How do you moisturize curly hair? Chris says…My question is about the curly hair products that are out there now, brands like Diva Curl and Ouidad. They’re very expensive and targeted to people who have ethnic hair and want to go natural or girls with curly hair who don’t want to straighten their hair anymore. The whole thing is about moisture moisture moisture. I was just wondering if you think you need to spend a lot of money on products that are specifically made for curly hair or if there are drugstore equivalents that are cheaper that work the same way. Also what ingredients do ...

Would you buy used makeup? Episode 103
Support the Beauty Brains by signing up for a free trail at Audible.com. Would you buy used makeup? Link Have you heard of this company, Glambot? It’s a startup company that is apparently sells a million dollars a year of pre-owned makeup. The company, which was founded in 2013 by CEO Karen Horiuchi, buys used makeup and resells it online. They clean and sanitize every product before resale. (They use heat or alcohol to sterilize containers or in some cases to “remove layers of product to get down to a fresh one.” Here are their guidelines: They only buy products on their “accepted brand” list which cover...

Are natural products as good as drug store brands? Episode 102
Is this natural product as good as a drug store brand? Gemma asks (in the Beauty Brains Forum)…It seems as though you guys aren’t the biggest fans of “natural” and “organic” cosmetics, but there seems to be a wider offering of lines at places like Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Erewhon. Lines like Andalou Naturals, Avalon Organics, MyChelle, and Dr. Hauschka. These are quite a bit more expensive than their drugstore counterparts and I’ve barely tried any of them. My question is, is there anything in these products that are as effective as the ones at the drugstore? They are chock-full of oi...

Benefit mascara – how to find a cheaper version
Ellen inquires…What is the best mascara? I use Benefit’s “They’re Real!” and for me, it does what it says – no flaking, smudging, comes off with a little oil. But it is about 22 dollars. Is there a less expensive brand with similar characteristics? They all make the same claim! I have had to try so many, and sometimes I think they change the formula, because I have to keep changing mascara’s. As a girl, I used Great Lash, but I am 60 now and haven’t tried it for….ages. The Beauty Brains respond: To find a cheaper version of your favorite product you can use a variation ...

Are cosmetics safer in Europe than in the US? Episode 101
Conclusion I think the conclusion I draw is that cosmetics you buy through regular distribution channels like shops, pharmacies and the big specialised online cosmetic websites are pretty much as safe as you can expect anything to be. The regulations are respected and followed by all the big suppliers and distributors. But the actual detail of what the regulations say is probably not as important as the motivations of the people who make the stuff. iTunes reviews I think it’s interesting to note that this question came to us in an iTunes review…those are really important to us. We took a blood oath to give a shout out ...

Beauty fixes from your kitchen Episode 98
Welcome  to a special “Lost Episode” edition of the Beauty Brains show. Perry and I are taking a couple of weeks off but in our absence we have a special treat for you. Before the current incarnation of our program we briefly experimented with podcasting back in 2010.
