Now you can get a FREE audio version of our second book, The Beauty Aisle Insider.  Just click this link to Audible.com Latest acne cure: battling bacteria I think we often overlook that even the best acne treatments can be problematic for many people. For example both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can irritate your skin. And if something is irritating you’re going to be less likely to use which means it’s not going to work as well. Even prescription drugs that are effective can have serious consequences. For example tetracycline, if taken at too early an age, can actually permanently stain your teeth...

Preservative free products can be dangerous! Episode 91
Perfume for poop I never realized how important it is to have a good perfume for poop. We really take a lot of things for granted living in a first world country and one of them is proper sanitation. A lot of places lack proper plumbing and instead use latrines or outdoor toilets. That’s not as much fun as it sounds like because sometimes the stench in these latrines becomes so great the people stop using them and just go outside. When that happens the groundwater can become contaminated which leads to the spread of all sorts of illnesses. This is not a trivial problem – it affects about 2.5 billion people ...

Does John Frieda 7 Day Volume treatment really work? Episode 90
This study helps provide a data point but it’s more about showing how difficult it is to measure hair volume in a meaningful way. So essentially all this means is that if you put this stuff on hair and shape the hair to give it more volume then the ingredient will help maintain that hair shape and therefore maintain your volume. There’s no evidence it works by getting inside the hair, rather it appears to work as a traditional styling agent. Of course traditional styling agents just wash out so what’s more interesting about this technology is that it stays in your hair. Let’s talk about that....

Are anti-wrinkle pillows good for anti-aging? Episode 86
This article is not from a peer reviewed journal, however) Still, it’s interesting because it explains how your skin release water during sleep that’s absorbed by the pillow case (both cotton and silk according to this author) and the result is that skin is “stuck” to the pillow case as these the microscopic points. Of course, less collagen means more wrinkles. I don’t know if this is completely accurate but it’s an interesting twist on the mech...

Have you heard about sunscreen shaming? I didn’t either but this is a real thing. There’s an entire discussion thread on the popular site Reddit dedicated to the phenomena. Apparently, not everyone is accepting of the idea that you should wear sunscreen to prevent getting tan. In this article there were a number of instances in which people were mocked because they were using sunscreen. They say it was even worse if they were using sunscreen on a cloudy day. Have you ever been mocked for wearing sunscreen? People must not realize that tan skin is damaged skin or that you can still get sun damage even when it’s cloudy...
