Funding Opportunity: Biomedical Technology Optimization and Dissemination Program
We’re pleased to share the notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for our biomedical technology optimization and dissemination (BTOD) centers (RM1) (PAR-23-110). The goals of the BTOD centers are to optimize state-of-the-art, NIGMS mission-relevant, late-stage technologies, and to disseminate these technologies to both experts and nonexperts in biomedical research for their broad use. A BTOD center may focus on optimizing a single technology or multiple integrated technologies. Community engagement activities should result in broad dissemination of the optimized technologies for the research community’s sustainable use....

Fight Aging! Newsletter, March 27th 2023
This study has potentially significant implications in the field of OA as it provides a novel strategy for OA treatment. A Vicious Cycle of Heart Failure and Dementia https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/03/a-vicious-cycle-of-heart-failure-and-dementia/ The end of life is not pretty. The body is a failing machine of many complex essential parts, and the failures cascade and feed into one another as it breaks down. There is pain, loss of capacity, loss of the self as the brain runs down. There is a tendency to paper over the ugly reality in public discussion, to not talk about the facts of the matter...

George Church on Reprogramming as a Treatment for Aging
In a recent interview, George Church offers opinions on partial reprogramming as an approach to rejuvenation. In the last few years this has moved from popular topic to becoming a sizable fraction of the longevity industry, given the large-scale funding that is now devoted to partial reprogramming groups. Short-term exposure to the Yamanaka factors can be used to reset the epigenetic patterns of a cell in old tissue to be more like those of a cell in young tissue, with corresponding gains in function. There are potentially serious issues to be worked out, such as how to eliminate the possibility of cancer due to the few ce...

Funding Opportunity: Research With Activities Related to Diversity (R01)
We’re pleased to share a new notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for the UNITE initiative, an NIH-wide effort to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in biomedical research. The Research With Activities Related to Diversity (ReWARD) (PAR-23-122) program aims to enhance the breadth and geographical location of research and research-related activities supported by NIH. The program supports the health-related research of scientists who are making a significant contribution to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) and who have no current NIH research project grant funding. ReWARD grants will also provid...

Administrative Supplements for IDeA Team Science Development Projects
We’re pleased to announce the availability of administrative supplements to Institutional Development Award (IDeA) grants for team science projects (NOT-GM-23-034). The supplements are intended for projects that bring together two or more investigators from IDeA states with different expertise to address complex basic, behavioral, clinical, and/or translational research questions through complementary approaches. The questions shouldn’t duplicate those that researchers are currently pursuing through the parent awards and should clearly benefit from the collective efforts of the collaboration. Applications are due Ju...

What Would John Henry Rauch Do Today As A HIT Entrepreneur?
BY MIKE MAGEE Health entrepreneurs today tend to give themselves very high grades, and seem surprised when their creations fall short of expectations due to a disconnect with funders or regulators with legal authority. But Medicine isn’t fair, and genius is not that common. What other conclusion can you draw from the thousands of references and citations featuring Philadelphia physician Benjamin Rush and his wild ideas on how to heroically treat Yellow Fever in 1793, but likely never heard of Dr. John Henry Rauch. The former signed the Declaration of Independence but directly or indirectly contributed to many an un...

CommonWell Marks its 10th Anniversary as TEFCA Gets Underway
The following is a guest article by Paul L Wilder, Executive Director, CommonWell Health Alliance. Nationwide Interoperability: It’s been a concept, a term bandied about for a while in various forms, but for those of us who have worked in health IT for more than a few years, we know that it has taken a long time for transformational change to be felt by the providers and the individuals they serve. It has also required that resilient individuals and organizations stay focused. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT’s Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) is indeed an instance of transfor...

In this study, we develop a rFOXN1 fusion protein that contains the N-terminal of CCR9, FOXN1, and TAT. We show here that, when injected intravenously (i.v.) into aged mice, the rFOXN1 fusion protein can migrate into the thymus and enhance T cell generation in the thymus, resulting in increased number of peripheral T cells. Our results suggest that the rFOXN1 fusion protein has the potential to be used in preventing and treating T cell immunodeficiency in the older adult.
