Introducing " Checkpoint: America "
Today, the Cato Institute is launching a new online initiative:Checkpoint America: Monitoring the Constitution-Free Zone. For over 60 years, the executive branch has, through regulatory fiat, imposed a “border zone” that extends as much as 100 miles into the United States. Within this area–which, according to theACLU, encompassestwo-thirds of the U.S. population –are a series of Soviet-style internal checkpoints run by the Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protecton (CBP) service. The majority of these stretch across the southwestern United States from southern Calfornia to the Texas Gulf Coast....

Much Ado About Yik Yak
Campus controversy is all the rage these days. Today ’s installment comes from the University of Mary Washington, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Members of the local student affiliate of the Feminist Majority Foundation took public positions against fraternities and various other problems exemplifying what was, in their view, a toxic student c ulture regarding sexual assault (for example, the men’s rugby team singing a necrophilic drinking song).Students who disagreed with the feminist activists went on Yik Yak, a now-defunct app that allowed anonymous users to post whatever they like. It turns out that the veil ...

Ethnic Cleansing vs. Genocide: The Politics Behind Labeling the Rohingya Crisis
On November 22, aftersome reluctance, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson joined theUnited Nations andUnited Kingdom in calling the current Rohingya crisis an “ethnic cleansing. ” Holding Myanmar’s military, security forces, and local vigilantes responsible for the crisis, Tillerson stated that the United Statescould pursueaccountability via targeted sanctions. While some hailed Tillerson ’s label of ethnic cleansingas a start, it ’s worth taking a closer look at the politics behind it. First, ethnic cleansing does not elicit a legal response, whereas the labels of “crimes against humanity” or “genocide” do...

A conversation with a Rigvir flack
Over the last two Mondays, I ' ve beenwriting about an unproven cancer therapy that I hadn ' t really heard much about before. The cancer treatment is called Rigvir; it is manufactured in Latvia and marketed primarily through a Latvian entity called the International Virotherapy Center (IVC). To recap, Rigvir is an unmodified Echovirus, specifically ECHO-7, that, according to the IVC, seeks out cancer cells, replicates in them, and thus lyses the cancer cells (causes their membranes to break, spilling out the cancer cells contents, thus killing the cell), hence the term " oncolytic virus. " Somehow, mysteriously Rigvir was...

Can the United States, China and Russia Cooperate on Trade?
The 2016 G20 summit in Hangzhou is fast approaching and, similar to the pre-summit meetings hosted by China throughout the year, the focus will be the state of the global economy. Still contending with sluggish global economic growth, the summit ’s theme of “Towards an Innovative, Invigorated, Interconnected and Inclusive World Economy” is especially timely. Under the umbrella of global economic growth, cultivating opportunities for trade and investment will become a major priority for G20 states, and three global powers—the United States, China, and Russia—are each developing their own multinational trade route ...

"Marine furnished a burned-out car, where she planned to live with her 2-year-old daughter. "My life is important because I have a child who has a future," she told the photographer Anahit Hayrapetyan. In 2010, Anahit — a member of @4.plus, a collective of Armenian women photographers — started photographing and recording the testimonies of women who were victims of domestic violence. The issue, she said, is commonplace in Armenia. But until recently, it has rarely been discussed in public. This weekend, the @nytimes #lensblog and @cunyjschool are sponsoring #nyportfolio16, an annual portfolio review that provides pho...

"An old dormitory where Marie found shelter. The 20-year-old Armenian woman has been married twice. She said she divorced her 1st husband because he beat her. Her 2nd husband was in prison and she was taking care of her children alone when she met the photographer Anahit Hayrapetyan. A member of @4.plus, a collective of Armenian women photographers, Anahit has been recording the testimonies of women in Armenia who were victims of domestic violence. Sometimes she was too late, though, and had to photograph funerals. This weekend, the @nytimes #lensblog and @cunyjschool are sponsoring #nyportfolio16, an annual portfolio rev...

Where Do K-1 Visa Holders Come From?
Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik were killed last week in a gun battle with police after they committed a mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.  Malik entered the U.S. on a K-1 visa, known as the fiancé visa, accompanied by Farook.  Their attack is the first perpetrated by somebody on the K-1 visa - igniting a debate over increasing visa security.    The government issued approximately 262,162 K-1 visas from 2005 to 2013 – 3177 or 1.21 percent of the total to Pakistani citizens.  Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) SECURE Act identifies 34 countries as particularly terror-prone.  There were 32,363 K-1 visa, 12.34 pe...

International CME: European Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education Conference Highlights New Accreditation Requirements
The Journal of European Continuing Medical Education recently published a recap of this year’s “Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes” (UEMS) Conference on continuing medical education (CME) in Europe. We have provided highlights from the conference report, written by Julie Simper, below. As a background, the UEMS established the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) in 2000 to ensure international mutual recognition of quality assessments of CME activities throughout Europe. As we have seen in the United States, CME has evolved in many ways since 2000. The Journal notes tha...

Ukraine Crisis Reminds Americans Why NATO Should Not Expand
Doug Bandow The bitter conflict in Ukraine drags on.  Russia continues to destabilize Kiev and NATO remains divided on how to respond. Washington has taken the lead against Moscow even though America has little at stake in Russia’s misbehavior.  In fact, the crisis has generated a spate of U.S. proposals to take military action and expand NATO. For instance, Sen. John McCain urged adding Ukraine to the “transatlantic” alliance.  Former UN ambassador John Bolton suggested including Georgia and Ukraine.  Other proposed candidates for the alliance include Armenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Finland, Kosovo...

Striving for Gender Equity: My Journey to Armenia
Judy Norsigian and Dr. Meri Khachikyan, coordinator of the Armenian edition of “Our Bodies, Ourselves,” present organizers with copies of the book. Looking back on 2013, one of the highlights for me was a trip to Armenia where I spoke about gender equity and witnessed a dozen young women organizing around the lack of sexuality education in their community. I was a featured speaker at a discussion on “Promoting Gender Equity and Breaking Gender Stereotypes,” hosted by the American University of Armenia (AUA), the Women’s Support Center in Yerevan, and the Armenian International Women’s Association. Dr. Bruce Bo...

Study Reports that Intensive Intervention Reduced Children's Secondhand Smoke by 17% Compared to Minimal Intervention; However, Results Show No Significant Difference in Exposure Between Groups
In this study, the p-value was 0.239. This means that the findings were not even close to statistical significance. In other words, one cannot conclude that there was any reduction in exposure associated with the intervention. The observation of a lower average exposure level in the intervention group could well have occurred by chance alone. What all of this means is that it is not correct or appropriate to report that the study found the intervention to be effective in reducing secondhand smoke exposure by 17%. The more appropriate reporting of this finding is that the study failed to find that the intervention had any si...

Hiv/aids: Post-soviet Countries, Including Armenia, Show Rise In Cases
As for labor migrants, the spread of epidemics is conditioned by the fact that in Russia (where the overwhelming majority of Armenian migrants go) HIV prevention state programs are ineffective, and besides, there is no cooperation with the other countries in the region, said Khmel, adding that the number of HIV/AIDS patients dropped by two percent in the Ukraine in 2012, in particular the cases of virus transmission through infected syringe among drug addicts have been reduced. Ashot Gevorgyan, national program officer of the HIV/AIDS international alliance in Armenia, says in the country in 58 percent of cases HIV is tra...
