Our very special delivery......Mumbai to UK...
I married late in life at the end of 2008,  aged 39. so starting a family straight away was important to me, as I knew my biological clock was ticking.  I fell pregnant at the end of 2009, we were so happy that it ad happened but to our devastation, this pregnancy ended in a miscarriage at 8weeks .We were totally heartbroken , but knew that due to my age this was a higher probability for me and not neglected. The following few months were hard , Christmas and the new year passed. But I was determined to carry on and prayed I would fall pregnant again....A year passed by and month after month , disappointment was ...

Wiser Gentlemen: The Shen Chinese Herb Posse
Founders note: This is a guest post by second year Chinese medicine student Derek Henderlong. Please do add your comments to the post, he is excited to learn from your contributions. “…It is said that there is a king ginseng in each field which supervises the growth of the rest, and in Korea it is believed that, in order to thrive, the ginseng has to hear each day the footsteps of its cultivator” ~Dixon Before I began my formal studies in Chinese medicine, I was already unknowingly following the golden walkway of medicine unfolding beneath my feet. I found myself eager to receive my weekly acupuncture. The benefits...

Business time : Staying updated with DH + new comment system
Just a quick business post to keep you informed about developments on the site. As I’ve said elsewhere, we’re gearing up with the content production, including podcasts! If you read the last few posts, including one about acupuncture and structural integration, a couple of posts playing with enticingly symbolic interpretations of the five phase elements (wood and fire so far), and one looking into various ways of practicing Chinese medicine in the contemporary context, I think you’ll agree that good things are happening. That might lead you to consider how you can stay up to date with all of this conte...

Structure, Function, and Information Transfer: Chinese Medicine through the Eyes of Stuctural Integration
Author’s Note: What I’m about to present to you is my honest, educated opinion, informed by years of study and clinical practice. I am not an academic researcher, nor an accomplished master. Still, the ideas presented below have deepened and broadened my practice so profoundly, that I feel I would be remiss in not sharing and offering them for consideration to my peers. Also, what better forum to present these ideas than Chinese Medicine Central? I welcome constructive discussion on this topic though the comments thread for this entry, or at my email address cintain@chinesemedicinecentral.com. I hope you find i...

Why you should ignore altmetrics and other bibliometric nightmares
Conclusions about bibliometrics Bibliometricians spend much time correlating one surrogate outcome with another, from which they learn little.  What they don’t do is take the time to examine individual papers.  Doing that makes it obvious that most metrics, and especially altmetrics, are indeed an ill-conceived and meretricious idea. Universities should know better than to subscribe to them. Although altmetrics may be the silliest bibliometric idea yet, much this criticism applies equally to all such metrics.  Even the most plausible metric, counting citations, is easily shown to be nonsense b...

Creating a container for true transformation – my next steps
In a recent article, I talked about some of the struggles (and triumphs) I’ve had in clinic. Those struggles have sometimes come because my knowledge and experience was insufficient – long hours of continuing education, poring over case files, and bothering the heck out of my teachers has helped resolve some of that. Other aspects of my struggle have had to do with factors far outside my control – a difficult economy causing stress that acupuncture could not help a patient overcome, for example. However, in contemplating my way forward, I have found that most of the problems I’ve encountered in clin...

Teaching Chinese Herbs – The Greatest Job On Earth
As you know, I have been teaching about Chinese herbs to second year students at NCNM since I graduated. I feel so lucky to have landed this job so early in my career. It kept me connected to my alma mater, while also forcing me to keep on top of my game with regards to knowing the herbs pretty well. But, what I didn’t really expect is that I’d discover such a love of teaching. That’s now old news, of course, but every year the love grows a little more. It grows partly because I get better at it, and increasing one’s skill level is a pleasurable process. But, honestly, the love deepens especially be...

Visiting a Mercury Free Dentist For Treatment
Holistic or biological dentistry refers to the concept in which dentists use a holistic or natural approach for providing dental care to patients. These dentists are very different from conventional dentists in the sense that their treatment process is free of the ingredients and materials such as fluoride and mercury. As a matter of fact, mercury free dentist is another name given to dentists practicing holistic dentistry because these dentists don’t believe in using mercury for dental treatment as it is a deadly toxin and can have long term consequences for individuals. Apart from that, these dentists are not just focu...
