The U.S. research and development system consists of activities from a range of R&D performers and sources of funding. These include the federal government, nonfederal governments, business, higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, and private businesses. Organizations that perform R&D often receive significant levels of outside funding, and organizations that fund R&D may also themselves be performers. New data from surveys performed by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation indicate that R&D performed in the United States totaled $ 67 billion in 2019. The estimate for 2020 is $ 708 billion.
