The management of colorectal liver metastases amenable of surgical resection: how to shape treatment strategies according to clinical, radiological, pathological and molecular features

In spite of recent advances in systemic treatments, metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) is a highly-lethal disease, with poor chance of long-term survival [1]. However, cure or prolonged disease-free remission are achievable in selected patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) eligible for metastases resection with radical intent [2 –5] . Recent advances in surgical techniques, the availability of active systemic oncological treatments and the wide spread of the multidisciplinary approach have expanded the percentage of patients deemed eligible for radical metastasectomy [6–9].
