Gastroschisis Prognostic Score Successfully Identifies Brazilian Newborns with High-Risk Gastroschisis
Gastroschisis is a congenital defect of the abdominal wall that occurs with an incidence of one in 4,000 live births [1]. This defect allows the herniation of abdominal viscera into the amniotic cavity. The exposure of these contents to the amniotic fluid can result in variable degrees of intestinal inflammation and injury [2]. These features include bowel matting, edema, friability, dilation, necrosis, and perforation, [3] all of which contribute to intestinal dysmotility and prolonged hospital length of stay [4].
