Ventral wall hernias are common. They can be congenital or acquired and it is estimated that approximately 25% of people will have one at some point in their life. True hernias have a fascial defect and therefore contents can protrude through and potentially become incarcerated and/or strangulated.
Common ones include:
Epigastric occurs between the sternum and umbilicus. It can appear midline or slightly off-center. In children they can spontaneously resole.
Umbilical occurs around the umbilical structures. These again often spontaneously resolve.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most common gastrointestinal emergencies in neonates. Mortality rates are from 0-45% depending on infant weight and gestation with more premature and smaller infants having greater mortality. NEC usually occurs in premature infants but it also occurs in term infants. The etiology is unknown but is probably multifactorial with ischemia and/or reperfusion playing some role. Gastroschisis Trends and Ecologic Link to Opioid Prescription Rates - United States, 2006-2015 | MMWR
During 2011-2015, gastroschisis prevalence was 4.5 per 10,000 live births, which was 10% higher than the prevalence during 2006-2010. An ecologic analysis found a higher prevalence of gastroschisis where opioid prescriptions rates were high, supporting epidemiologic data suggesting an association between opioid use during pregnancy and gastroschisis.
