Early pregnancy teaching and training amongst obstetric trainees in a tertiary maternity hospital

The first trimester of pregnancy, defined as the first thirteen completed weeks of pregnancy in The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines, is commonly referred to as “early pregnancy”[1] . Common complications and presentations to the emergency department (ED) in early pregnancy include vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain, affecting one in four of all women internationally [2]. Serious risks, such as ectopic pregnancy, have incidence rates of 14.8 per 1000 m aternities in Ireland[3].
