Women Leaders in Academic Research: Re-Thinking Mentoring: Perspectives from a Biomedical Engineer

Series Description: Invited monthly lecture series highlighting& honoring women leaders in academic research, especially related disciplines of Interventional Radiology, Biomedical Engineering, Radiology, Imaging Sciences, Data Science,& Image-Guided Oncology. The honorary lecture series was established by the NIH Center for Interventional Oncology as a small effort to help counter the under-representation of women in academic research& the impact of gender disparity& implicit bias on role modeling and mentoring. Monthly topics are open-ended& are geared towards highlighting successful female or other under-represented academic leaders, as role models for trainees. Lecture Synopsis: Mentoring is hard to define and means different things to different people. Often we think about one mentor who will teach us how to be a great academic, grant writer, lab manager, partner, and parent – and that those lessons all come from one (superhuman) person. In this talk, Dr. Jenna Mueller will explore re-thinking mentoring and transitioning from the idea of one (superhuman) mentor to many mentors (each with different strengths). She will also share about her journey as a biomedical engineer, the role that mentoring has played, and a few lessons learned as she transitioned from a postdoc mentee to a faculty mentor. For more information go tohttps://www.cc.nih.gov/centerio/women_leaders.htmlAir date: 9/28/2021 2:00:00 PM
