Adolescent suicide and self-harm have been increasing in the United States for well over the past decade.1 A multi-factorial and complex problem to solve, in recent years suicide and self-harm have been the targets of novel psychotherapeutic and pharmacologic treatments. The contributors and editors of Adolescent Suicide and Self Injury: Mentalizing Theory and Treatment aim to introduce what, to many readers, may be a new psychotherapeutic treatment modality —mentalization-based treatment (MBT).

We describe the feasibility of a short-term (8 –10 sessions) psychological crisis intervention (CI) protocol for children and adolescents aged 8–17 years (n = 30, mean ± standard deviation 12.9 ± 2.4 years) who were referred to an outpatient mental health clinic due to suicidal ideation, aggression, severe anxiety, or extreme family conflict.
