The epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, and management toward COVID-19 patients with Type 2 diabetes: a systematic review

Diabetes mellitus, defined as a group of diseases characterized by signs and symptoms of chronic hyperglycemia, is one of the most significant public health challenges worldwide [1]. According to the International Diabetes Federation, there were approximately 463 million adults suffering from diabetes in 2019 [2], and this number is expected to rise to 592 million by 2035 [3]. The disease burden of diabetes has now been raised by the prevalence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which has been continuously increasing to over 169 million confirmed patients and over 3.5 million deaths globally as of 31 May 2021 [4].
