The effects of perioperative dexamethasone on eicosanoids and mediators of inflammation resolution: A sub-study of the PADDAG trial

Dexamethasone is frequently used during surgery for the prevention and treatment of perioperative nausea and vomiting. [1] There is evidence that glucocorticoids such as dexamethasone may induce hyperglycaemia [2] and that acute hyperglycaemia may impair immune function and wound healing after surgery [3]. However, in our recent trial, we showed that compared with placebo, dexamethasone 4mg or 8mg did not induce greater hyperglycaemia in nondiabetic and well controlled diabetic patients[4].
