An Uncommon Cause of Severe Hypercalcemia: Vitamin D Supplementation in Sarcoidosis
A 37-year-old male presented to the hospital with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting of 2 days ’ duration. Two months previously, he had a similar presentation and an elevated serum calcium level of 10.9 mg/dL. His hypercalcemia symptoms resolved after medical management, and he left the hospital against medical advice, refusing further workup for hypercalcemia. He went to a homeopathy prov ider, and his blood work showed a low vitamin D level of 8 ng/mL. He was prescribed 50,000 units of weekly vitamin D 25 (OH) therapy for 4 weeks’ duration.
